Bodi suspended, charged with match-fixing - CSA [Update]

Gulam Bodi has submitted his plea to CSA after being charged with contriving to fix, or otherwise improperly influence aspects of the 2015 Ram Slam T20 tournament.

"We are waiting to see if they accept it, if not it will go to a tribunal," Ayoob Kaka, Bodi's lawyer told ESPNcricinfo.

In essence, that means Bodi has admitted to at least some of the allegations, because a not guilty plea would not require any acceptance. Irrespective of whether CSA accepts the plea, and move to sanction Bodi, or do not accept the plea, and begin a hearing, they will have to take any evidence of criminality they may uncover to the South African police services, who could launch their own investigation.

The Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act of 2004 makes match-fixing and spot-fixing in sport a crime in South Africa.

In a release issued by CSA ten days ago, the South African board said Bodi was cooperating with anti-corruption officials even though when he was initially suspended in mid-December, he also faced a charge of refusing to co-operate with the investigation. CSA has since also said they are waiting on Bodi to provide them with information on other suspects, who are also under investigation.

A legal case is being prepared against several other players and an insider revealed that some of them "accepted money to fix", while others failed to report corrupt activity.

Eish, not happy to see anyone banned but it needed to be done.
 
Hopefully we finally hear who the others are involved.

Why 20 years and not life? Any criminal charges?
 
He had better get off worse than a slap on the wrist if they want to send a strong message that cheating of any kind is not acceptable in our game. If not, what do we the public think. What about the sponsors.
 
Hectic when you think about it, most players might move into coaching or administration if they have only played cricket. Bodi now needs a complete career change with no experience.
 
CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA has imposed a ban of 20 years on Gulam Bodi after he admitted charges of contriving or attempting to fix matches in the 2015 RAM SLAM T20 Challenge Series.

Bodi was charged with several counts of contriving or attempting to fix matches on 31 December 2015 following an investigation conducted by CSA’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit. Under the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Code for Personnel, Bodi had until 18 January 2016 to respond to the charges.

CSA issued a decision outlining the process it adopted with respect to adjudication of sanctions upon Bodi which is available on its website, www.cricket.co.za.

Bodi is immediately banned for a period of twenty years from participating in, or being involved in any capacity in, any international or domestic match or any other kind of function, event or activity (other than authorized anti-corruption education or rehabilitation programmes) that is authorized, organized, sanctioned, recognized or supported in any way by CSA, the ICC, a National Cricket Federation or any member of a National Cricket Federation. Five of those years are suspended on condition that Mr Bodi commits no further offences under the Code and demonstrates to CSA’s reasonable satisfaction that he has actively and constructively participated in corruption-related player education programmes when asked to do so.

“CSA thoroughly considered all the relevant factors and determined that a lengthy ban was appropriate”, commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “Our attitude to corruption will always be one of zero tolerance. There is no doubt that Mr Bodi’s actions have threatened the integrity and image of the game that we love and he must be handed a strong punishment. We have had many discussions with Mr Bodi and he accepts the folly of his actions,” added Mr Lorgat.

“We are fortunate in this instance that several players rejected his approaches and, as a direct result of our integrity processes, which include CSA and SACA player education programmes, the matter was brought to light and meticulously investigated,” said Mr Lorgat. “There are no winners in this sort of ill-fated and unfortunate matter. However, all of us in the cricket community must learn from this experience and remain vigilant. We expect that that Mr Bodi himself will learn and will actively assist us in reminding players of the dangers of corrupt behaviour,” said Mr Lorgat.

Since certain aspects of the investigation are ongoing, neither CSA nor the ICC will make any further comment in respect of the matter.

This includes IPL and BBL if anyone was wondering...those are organised by the BCCI and Cricket Australia.

It'll include coaching, commentating, administration and all that other stuff around cricket as well. His playing career was pretty much done already. CSA wouldn't be able to fine him, he's probably not contracted to anyone.

They've also handed it to the police as well, which is where the courts could come into play. I expect he'll sing like a bird on the stand if it means he avoids jail time.
