A body has been found on Table Mountain. Details are still sketchy at this stage and authorities are currently on the scene.

The South African National Parks's Merle Collins says the body was discovered early on Tuesday near Platteklip Gorge.

“I can confirm that a body was found on Table Mountain, identity unknown. The SAPS forensic team is on site and the SAPS will issue a statement later.”

The area has been cordoned off by police vans and tape. The section around the starting point of the Platteklip Gorge Hiking Trail is off limits.
Table Mountain National Parks officials are guiding visitors and hikers away from the scene.
Police are also restricting access further down the road.

Ghanaian national Charlotte Nikoi went missing during a family hike on Table Mountain on 27 April and has not been seen since.

The mountain closed for visitors? I assume the cable car and area? Quite a significant step...

Police have confirmed it was a woman's body discovered on Table Mountain on Tuesday.

Officials and park rangers retrieved the remains near Platteklip Gorge at around 10 am.

It's not yet clear why a search party went out on Tuesday.

Ghanaian tourist Charlotte Nikoi went missing while hiking on the same trail with her husband and daughter in March.

“We can confirm that a decomposed body of a female was discovered this morning on Table Mountain by detectives of our provincial detective team and park rangers. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”

Doubt that there would have been such a response if it seemed that it had been an accident.

Circumstantial evidence must indicate a crime.

Not so sure .... I think the response is linked to the fact that there was this reasonably high profile case of a missing person (Nikoi).

Even so, no need for such a response to an accidental death.

Why would you even have a out of proportion response to a murder? It is too late. The only time when a big response is needed, is when lives are at stake.

Sure, but murders need to be solved, and that takes a lot of forensic evidence and effort.

Also in order to avoid serial murders.

You're right, I guess if they suspect a murder, they were probably preventing the scene from being contaminated.

I wonder when identification will be completed.

This sort of news never makes pleasant reading. Can only hope that there was no foul play involved. Hopefully, somehow, the family of the deceased can find closure.

:(

If she fell she wouldn't have buried herself.

I think it was said she was only a third of the way up when she said she was turning back - that would not be in an area where she could fall and remain hidden.
