I know that Datapro was offering such a service a few years back... but there is a company called Mushroom Networks who claim their bonding hardware will work with any ISP or combination of ISPs.

Does anyone have any insight to this technology. Does it really give your x times the speed or is it just a fancy form of load balancing. How do I get it working with an ISP of my choice?
 
Vox's Fishbone is load balancing, not true bonding. MWEB and most of the other ISPs offering bonding solutions is a true bonding solution.
 
There is no way that you can do line bonding by having hardware on just one side, unless you're establishing like a VPN connection to Mushroom Networks, which would introduce more latency.

It really sounds like just a fancy load balancing device.
 
The mushroom networks product can be deployed in two ways. 1) standalone - this way HTTP is 'bonded' but all other protocols get load balanced. A single thread HTTP download will use the combined speed of all lines, but all other protocols will only get the maximum speed of one line 2) peered with another device at the datacentre - this is a true bonding solution as far as I understand.

Have you seen the price on these things...last time I checked they were in the region of R 25k each. They do however seem to be fantastic.
 
I am not in the market to buy one, as load balancing works fine for me... am just curious as to how and if they work?
 
I'm actually also curious...how do they 'bond' the HTTP? Do they proxy the HTTP GET requests ? Who knows. Very interesting indeed...they must be using a linux base os but as far as my research has shown you can't do this on native linux. Probably a custom kernel. Would be great to have a single threaded download spread over all my DSL lines....Using 3x 4Mbps lines I get around 11Mbps when using a download manager with load balancing...would be great if single threaded downloads showed the same performance...anyone got any ideas ?

Example: 6Mbps downlink and 786Kbps uplink on 6 lines.

Truffle can operate in 3 modes:

a) When peered over the Internet to another Truffle device that has the VLL server license, Truffle will be enabled with total uplink and downlink speed of the 6 DSL lines, i.e. 36Mbps downlink and 4.6Mbps uplink speed. Please see our VLL (Virtual Leased Line) product from the left menu for further details.

b) Via the optional Broadband Bonding Service subscription, the Truffle will be enabled with the total uplink and downlink speed of the 6 DSL lines, i.e. 36Mbps downlink and 4.6Mbps uplink speed.

c) If Truffle is not peered to another Truffle with VLL server module or does not have the Broadband Bonding Service, then Truffle will operate in standalone mode. In standalone mode all http downlink traffic will be bonded (i.e. file downloads will happen with 36Mbps). For all other types of traffic intelligent load balancing will distribute the traffic on a session by session basis and therefore for a single non-http session or for a single upload session the speed will be limited to one of the DSL lines, i.e. 768Kbps.
 
If you control only one side of the link, a Mikrotik router for under a grand will do the job perfectly well.
 
you can buy in expensive dedicated load balances that do the same job...

but I think what they are doing is running a VPN into their network... so for SA customers it will have high lag.
