Hi all.

I have an old compaq 8510p laptop.
Does anyone here knows how to get it to boot from USB?
The boot priority can be set for USB CD Rom, USB floppy, USB superdisk,USB HD, optical drive ,notebook HD and network controller, but no option for a flash drive.

Am I missing something here??
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Tx

Go to hard disk boot priority. It's often listed there.

It should boot from USB Hard Disk just fine

Ah. Guess as it's a single drive laptop they didn't include that option.

Popped out for a smoke.
will go and give it a try just now.
tx.

USB Hard Disk doesn't work ether.
The light on the flash disk does not even come on.

/sighs

Maybe it is enabled in a later BIOS update?

I'll check if there is an update for the Bios.
Tx for the help gents.
Think I'll go for a beer.

USB Hard Disk is the correct option. Also try a different USB stick, on my nx6110 some sticks are not picked up at boot & you can't boot from them while others work fine.

The boot priority can be set for [...], USB floppy, USB superdisk,USB HD,
Any USB pen drive can be formatted for one of above option. Your BIOS priority is set correct. However there is no standard for booting from USB mass storage. Frequently (like in this case) BIOS shows support, but fails to boot. It depends on many formatting options and operating system you are trying to boot. Try to format with RMPrepUSB and follow suggestions.
If you are trying to boot XP installation CD, it will fail, as XP installator do not support USB mass storage. There are workarounds, working sometimes...

You have to format the SD card or USB stick to work as bootable floppy or hard drive. I use RMPrepUSB and used 2/4GB SD card as a bootable floppy and a hard drive.

junky beat me to it.

Also, what size usb stick and how is it formatted?
