Booze ban for new drivers

Slog, the "@rseholes that cause the fatal accidents" don't plan to go out and run people over, just as you don't plan to do that after a few drinks.

Sorry if not drinking and driving isn't convenient for you.
 
thing is.. there are private taxi's that do this sort of thing in major cities... yes it's not cheap, but it's cheaper than a life sentance or bail.

Anyway... my girlfriend doesn't drink... so I have a driver.

If you get drunk, and kill someone, are you going to claim its the goverments fault because there wasn't a public transport system to take you home? No matter what you say, you will be responsible for your actions

You miss my point, i am not trying to condone d&d i am looking for a plausable alternative! Stop the preaching or save it for the jeak thread.

Any answers to the designated driver question?

Does it work? Sure - people use it around the world. There are plenty of countries with far stricter d/d laws that SA - in the UK for example they'll breathalyze people in the morning. Only metropolitan areas have decent public transportation so outside of those they have to use the designated driver system.

I suspected as much. It's alot easier to have a zero tolerance stance on an issue when that issue doesn't directly affect you. In the same way that very few people who drive powerful cars are anti-speeding. I don't condone drinking and driving, but I think following the law should be made a little less inconvenient for those of us with girlfriends who drink.

You're taking the piss now right? Nobody is forcing you to drink and get behind the wheel.

I only had her for a year... so thats what I do now, before that I'd walk home, or even stay in a hotel... although check in proved difficult.
 
lucklly I live in Cape Town CBD and Rikki's(london cabs) are cheap 20 - 30 bucks..

Also have a couple of mates that spent a abundance of time in the US and they will not go wout without a sober driver.. and some people dont need to drink to have a good time.. Pity I aint one of those ppl.. so I try and hookup a lift when I am traveling far... but besides that I drive drunk..... it only really become an issue for me when I am traveling distance.. it's durbanville - cape town 30km...

But i think that the law would be good and if it became the norm taxi prices would come down and something like the rikki's service would be able to extend its range further than just Cape Town. Check it out www.rikkis.co.za

I hope you get caught and your vehicle gets appropriated while you rot in jail. Criminal.
 
The problem here is that alcohol impairs your judhgement. So when you have had just a bit too much to drink, you don't realise it, or think that it's no problem you can handle it because you are tough or something. And when you have had a lot too much to drink you don't care.

I don't see the connection between having had your license for less than two years and drinking and driving. Is the logic that you will be a better driver and therefore be able to overcome the effect of alcohol? Thats nonesense. If the Germans think it's a good idea for Zero tolerance (and it probably is), then it should apply to everyone, not merely those who got their licenses relatively recently. In a european context with excellent and cheap public transport I think there should be a zero rate on Blood alcohol for drivers.

I think the link is catch them young... if a person from the years of 18 for 3 years has a zero drinking policy then are probaly not likley to change thier ways just becasue they turn 21... you probally find the goverment has a 5 year plan to implment a zero drinking policy..

Think only goot things can come from it.. the problem is changing people set in there ways.. like myself no matter how stupid it is to drink and drive...
 
Remember that your BA lvls drop 0.1% every hour after you stop drinking.

So for instance after a 3 drinks your lvls will be averaged at about 0.7%. If you want to legally drive then your gonna have to wait about 2 hours before you can legally drive...

Luckily i stay in cape town next to the part spots so its not really an issue. Though since I got a car last year december I seem to drink a lot less since I am expected to get my own sorry ass home nowadays rather than sponge a couch from a friend.
There is also a dedicated service for party goers...I remember last year getting a pamphlet from the company. You phone them and they come get you and take you home.....dunno if they tuck you in or what though......maybe you gotta tip em a bit extra for that.
 
Its amazing how some people hold up European standards as the "right way" when it suits them, but as soon as it does not, its a "stupid idea".

Compare: Autobahns argument to drunk driving argument.

Maybe, just maybe, if people in South Africa had the smallest respect for the law (like STOPping at a STOP street), we can start to think about an Autobahn.
