Booze ban for new drivers

They would have had my vote too.

Not a bad idea, I just wonder how long after your last drink you have to wait till no alcohol will be detected? Assuming you have one or two and not ten. :)

What about cough mixture?
Not all cough medicine has alcohol in it.

If you're knocking back NightQuil by the shot you're prob not up to driving anyway. :)

Got my vote.

Never understood why booze and driving are introduced to the young 'uns at the same time...

Turn 18, heres the keys to your brand new Volocity and here, have a beer to celebrate. Craziness.

Maybe so but plenty of people drink before 18 anyway. The problem is in SA society drinking and driving still seems to be acceptable, make it socially unacceptable and it'll stop. Easier said than done though.

i dunno, take this for instance im going to lunch with my chick to cresta, i will have 2 beers maybe 3 in about 2 hours

thats doesnt even affect my mind

laws are laws but thats one harsh law

drunk dirivers who get in their cars when they are stumbling around is bad, an oke having 3 beers at lunch is not bad

plz bare in mind my chick drives home, all im saying is that i think thats a very harsh law

I like the idea I think Vovlo had... your steering wheel measures the alcohol content in your blood through your sweat glands, and if you're over, the car doesn't start... no excusing that.... if it works perfectly. < IF....

So then what? Catch the bus home and fetch the car in the morning??? Come on FFS this is SA! IF there was a bus the car would not be there in the morning. Get bloody real.

Its a line that needs to be drawn.
If 2 is OK, then why not 3 - after all, I weigh 50kgs more than you.
"oooh, my metabolism is faster and my liver woirks better!"
"ooh, I had two glasses of water and a piece of raw steak before I drink".

Its just too easy to stretch the law.

Driving = ZERO drinking. Thats my opinion. Makes no nevermind to me if its one beer or two. Should be ZERO.

Well...for FFS, you should have thought of that BEFORE you went out by yourself with out a designated driver... can't blame someone else for not planning ahead.

So? How the hell do you get home then Mr. holier than thou??

You dont drink, you use a designated driver, you take taxis/public transportation . . . hell, if you're that much of an alkie that you have to drink then move-in next to a pub ;)

I think the point being made here was that we need to be given more alternatives to drinking and driving. Arranging for a designated driver is not always easy. A decent public transport system would help. Then we could all leave our cars at home and drink as much as we like safe in the knowledge that we'd still get home safe and sound.

Do people REALLY use the designated driver thing? What does the poor sod do while y'all are getting pissed? Does this work?

How about hiring a student to sit in the car and wait for you? MoFo would probably steal the bloody car!

PLEASE come up with a feasible alternative to driving after a "few" and loads of people would use it. (Not the arsé holes that cause the fatal accidents tho!)
