Hi

Does anyone know the location of the Bothasig exchange?

For my phone line and DSL application, Telkom has asked me the distance from the exchange, as if I should know where the exchange is located. Asked them where it is, and they said they are not allowed to give out that information. WTF?

isn't it as you come down bosmansdam the road used to end in a T junction (the road has now been extened to meet up with platteklooef road) you can turn left to go to bothasig or right to edgemead. There is a big telscum building on the left.

Why are they asking you for the distance? That person has the info on the screen in front of them!!! (based on your erf number)

They even told me to go look for an distribution point in the area, because they don't where it is.

Note: this only applies for CABLES, not ADSL/DSLAMs, etc.

Now thats the stuff! Thanks for putting me on the right track. I phoned the network planner for the area. They assured me that they will be adding my complex to their planning and that I can try again in 4 to 6 weeks. Unfortunately, he also mentioned that ADSL is a big problem in the area. It might just be out of range of the Bothasig exchange. The direct distance between me and the exchange 3.9km which is a bit worrying. He mentioned that they are working on some kind of wireless-lookalike thing which would give you a phone line indistinguishable from a normal line, except that it uses 3G. As for the bandwidth costs, he wasn't too clear, but mentioned that it would somehow be comparable to ADSL, and the idea is that the end-user doesn't even know it isn't a normal telephone line. How that is going to work, I don't know.

Can someone tell me how ADSL works. I know there is some kind of 4.5km limit, but is that distance less when you want 4MB DSL and futher when you only want 384?
