30 years ago many places also accepted racism and sexism much more than today. Obviously it is still with us, but at least it is frowned upon more today than yesterday. I think we have come along way where many kids would have been allowed to tease and traumatise as we were not that "enlightened". I do agree though that our punishment system sucks big time.

A boy 12 years old has to go to court for pulling a girls scarf. And Being charged for "hate crimes". Poor boy, just for being a boy, he will be more traumatized that the girl. Probably scarred for the rest of his life. Imagine, being taken to court. As a common criminal.

what would have been the consequences if she was walking around without her scarf? I think there is quite hefty penalty involved in doing so. and well, woman mostly get the raw deal (its not true for all people/situations) but in some quarters it works like that. so its a serious matter. could have been handled differently though I think, and earlier, so it didnt have to get to this point.

I recognise the thinking behind creating a special category called hate crime, but I cannot see how it has led to any worthwhile result. These laws should be struck off the books.

And of course we have the usual claims that corporal punishment would fix this boy's behaviour or have prevented him from engaging in it. I must have imagined the existence of bullying when corporal punishment was still legal. Maybe they didn't have that special bully-prevention cane at the schools I attended.

At twelve? I don't think so, unless boys these days are maturing a lot later than they did when I was a boy.

Thirty years ago he would have been sent home for a darn good hiding, and the next day all would have been well at school.

Wrong, he would have received his hiding, then returned the next day to take revenge on the girl, only this time being sure not to get caught. I'm afraid I actually was at school 30 years ago and corporal punishment whether at home or at school did absolutely nothing to deter bullies. If anything it made them more vicious and devious.
