New York - A 12-year-old boy accused of trying to rip the head scarf off a Muslim classmate during recess has been charged in New York City with a hate crime.

The boy appeared on Thursday in family court with his father and his lawyer. He's a 6th-grader at a Staten Island middle school and is being charged as a juvenile. A call to his lawyer wasn't immediately returned. The boy's father says his son is also a Muslim.

Police and school officials say the boy has a history of harassing the 13-year-old girl, taunting her and threatening her on at least four separate occasions.

The police report says he asked, “Are you Muslim?” while trying to remove her scarf.

The girl suffered minor injuries. If convicted, he faces 18 months in juvenile detention. - Sapa-AP

Americans.........

/me mourns the days of good hidings.

Me too.. Just punish the kid, tell him what he's doing is wrong, and let it be done with. Now it has to turn into some bloody PC, political, legal soapbox with lawyers making millions and nothing getting solved.

And since when is pulling a scarf off someone's head a crime??? Very rude yes, but a crime? WTF is wrong with our society these days? :wtf:

I'm not saying this is right.

But does all boys not think of girls as disgusting at that age?

Thirty years ago he would have been sent home for a darn good hiding, and the next day all would have been well at school.
But this way, thousands of dollars are wasted, hundreds of man hours, a court room and judge has been dragged into what should have been dealt with by the school and the parents, and two children are traumatised/indoctrinated into thinking that childhood problems are much bigger than they appear and can only be solved by litigation.
What an enlightened society we live in!

Don't worry, this dude is going to get smacked on his bum with some hard Disco Sticks ;)

A boy at my old school was expelled for doing the same thing

The guy is going to turn into a uglier person when he is sent to Juvi. Really like some previous said, a good klap and then we done. But to now mix that child with other bad apples, will result in a worse person.

We would have been expelled and expulsion were worse than jail. It went on your permanent school record.

so is a wedgie also considered a hate crime then.... damn I would have spent a lot of time in juvie

Shame he probably just likes her, thats how 12 yr old boys flirt. Unless she is the only muslim in his class or he treats all the other muslims in his school this way.

30 years ago many places also accepted racism and sexism much more than today. Obviously it is still with us, but at least it is frowned upon more today than yesterday. I think we have come along way where many kids would have been allowed to tease and traumatise as we were not that "enlightened". I do agree though that our punishment system sucks big time.

Me thinks this is the major reason he got into juvie, sounds a lot more physical than simple childish teasing
