Johannesburg - An 8-year-old boy is in an induced coma after a brick flew through the passenger window of the car he was travelling in, striking him on the head.

The boy is a victim of a series of four reported incidents of brick-throwing last Thursday, allegedly perpetrated by the same man on the N12 near The Glen shopping centre, south of Johannesburg, Netwerk24 reported on Monday.

Justin Slabbert and his two children, Caden and daughter Eden, 11, were on their way to their Benoni home on Thursday after being picked up from school in Krugersdorp.

At about 14:30, a man walking on the N12 threw a brick through Slabbert’s passenger window.

After hearing the noise, Slabbert checked on his two children immediately. His daughter Eden was unharmed, but he received no response from Caden, who was bleeding from the head.

Luckily, a Netcare911 ambulance was travelling on the same stretch of road at the time of the incident.

Slabbert, spotting the ambulance in his rear view mirror, pulled off to the side of the road to seek medical help for his unconscious son.

More incidents

Before long, a second car had pulled up to the ambulance on the side of the road, reporting a similar incident.

The driver, Darrell Badenhorst, reported that his 42-year-old girlfriend, Marionette Schwab, had been struck on the head by a brick a few metres further down.

She too, was unconscious, and bleeding from the head.

A third car also pulled up to the paramedic to report the same incident, but no injuries were reported in this incident.

Both victims were treated at the scene and transported to hospital.

Recovery

Doctors said that they feared the 8-year-old would not survive the ordeal, but a successful surgery has seen him make a remarkable recovery.

He is expected to be brought out of the coma on Monday. Part of his skull had been removed to prevent further swelling on the brain.

Both Schwab and Caden are stable and will have brain scans this week.

Metro Police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Johannesburg metro police, confirmed a brick was also thrown through a fourth car window on Thursday. It was unclear whether anyone was injured in the incident.

Don't kill the perp. Take him to the local residents. You like bricks so much huh?

If it were my kid. Would check that kid gets medical attention ASAP. Once he is sorted, go looking for brick thrower and return his brick.

Why? Why would someone do this? This guys face should be smashed in with a bloody brick!

My guess was hijacking as soon as you stop but it does not seem to be the case... I don't get it either...

Back in the day I had a situation where a guy was taking his new born home from hospital and people threw stones. This was on Rivonia Road cnr South. The guy hauled out and wasted one of the stone throwers and drove off. He came back later and told us what had happened.

I have a suspicion that the brick thrower is most likely mentally challenged.

Most likely. I see them all the time on our roads here. Guys walking around praying or shouting at the cars going past or crawling hands and knees in the center median. Every now and then you'll see one of them lying dead. Probably tossed a brick at someone.

I have no idea...but disturbing that youngsters believe such behaviour is normal... :wtf: moments for me!

Cape Town - A girl pretended to be dead during an attack in which her friend was killed after they were both assaulted and set alight.

The Kalksteenfontein teenager, who is too afraid to reveal her identity, said she didn’t realise her friend Stacey-Lee Mohale, 16, had died during the attack by two teenage boys.

The 17-year-old was visiting her aunt in Heinz Park, Mitchells Plain, when they were attacked two weeks ago.

She was discharged from hospital last Thursday and Stacey was laid to rest on Saturday.

An 18-year-old man from Valhalla Park appeared in court last Thursday in connection with the murder and assault.

On Sunday the teen recalled the moment she nearly lost her life.

Speaking from her home, she was still visibly shaken and in pain with staples in her head, arm and back.

“Stacey and I were on our way home on Friday night when two boys came up behind us and asked if we have any [valuables] on us,” she said.

“They then told us to walk with them and when we refused, they grabbed us around the neck and took us to a nearby field.

“There they started hitting us and stabbing us after we fell to the ground.”

The soft-spoken girl said that their attackers stacked tyres on top of them then set them alight.

She claimed one of the assailants was as young as 13.

The girl's attacker threw a brick against her head during the assault.

“As we were lying on the ground, they threw a [concrete] brick on my head and then stacked the tyres on top of us,” she recalled.

“They then used a lighter to set the tyres alight.

“When I felt the heat I moved away and I managed to move the tyres away from Stacey.

“I didn’t know if Stacey was burnt or not.”

The girl said she lost consciousness but woke up again just before the boys walked off.

She says: “I remember waking up and I heard one of them say ‘my broer, kom ons loop want hulle is altwee dood’ (Come brother, let’s walk. Both of them are dead).

“I just kept quiet and played dead.”

The next thing she remembered is waking up in hospital.

Her mother, 36, said she fainted when her sister called with the news.

The mom said: “She said was one is dead and the other is still alive but she couldn’t tell me who.”

The mother saw her battered daughter in hospital the following morning.

“She could talk but I didn’t want to ask her about the incident,” she said.

“We also didn’t want to tell her Stacey is dead because we didn’t want to upset her.”

In a shocking twist, the teenager met a woman in hospital who had also been assaulted and allegedly raped on the same night by the same suspect.

The two started talking when the teen recognised the woman’s face from the area.

The girl said: “I asked what happened to her and she said she was assaulted... I told her I was also assaulted.

“The next day I heard her talking to police and she mentioned her attacker’s name, then I told police it was the same person who attacked me.”

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said police are not aware of a second suspect.

The 18-year-old suspect is in custody and will appear in the Wynberg Court on Thursday.

I had an incident where I was driving with my Dad we approached a bridge and I saw a guy looking over and running to the other side. I sped up as much as I could and the rock he threw landed on the back window instead of the windscreen as he planned. I kept going and pulled over further along.

I think he planned that I would have to pull over because of the smashed windscreen and then rob us or steal the car.

Now I always check bridges as I approach...

Sadly this type of barbaric incident happens all around the country. There was a stage where this was a regular occurrence on the N2 in Cape Town. It also happens in Durban as well along the N2.

I think the plan is to cause an accident/force the car to stop and then rob, rape, kill the occupants of the vehicle depending on how the savage feels that day I suppose.

But don't worry guys and girls, our president doesn't believe there is any violence or crime in SA. And if there is it is a direct result of apartheid so please don't blame him. It is apartheid's fault that teenagers are throwing rocks at peoples heads and through cars windows travelling at over 100km/h. Don't you dare blame the ANC.

My domestic worker was robbed and assaulted the other day, and her friend was stabbed in the same incident while coming home from shopping. Things are just glorious in the rainbow nation, nothing to see here.

Zuma I hope your b@lls and spear rot and fester away for what you have turned this once beautiful country into.
