Boy dies in train accident

A three-year-old boy died after he was hit by a train in Matsulu, Mpumalanga police said on Sunday.

The boy died on Saturday, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

The boy's mother was doing her laundry near a stream in Matsulu near Nelspruit.

While she was busy with her laundry, the boy played next to a railway line.

He got caught by a piece of metal that was on the railway line and was hit by a train.

Police are investigating the accident.

Hlathi appealed to parents to keep a watch over their children and not allow a second to pass without knowing their whereabouts.

He said last year a mother was also doing her washing near a river in Tonga when her son drowned.

"The boy played in a danger zone," Hlathi said.

Some poor kid woke up this morning and did not realise it was his last day. I live next door to a railway line where we sadly see many fatalities.

Most recent one was last week, then in November it was a 9yr old kid - I still remember seeing him and his mates walk around our street earlier the day as they were bored and looking for something fun to do.

Quite surprised this doesn't happen more often. There's quite a few townships built right around train tracks. Even here in Toti the tracks have almost no fencing around them and kids often cross them on the way to the beach.

This is sad and hopefully people will learn from this but I have my doubts.

I can guarantee the mother is second guessing every decision she made.

Fact is accidents happen. Children move quickly and in the blink of an eye they can put themselves in danger. Yes, perhaps if something had been done differently this child would have lived to see another day, but there'll always be more opportunities to make a mistake. Only a parent who has absolutely nothing else to do can watch their child every second.
