Braai

There's nothing funny about wood and a kettle braai.

But seriously, some people say you should only use coal, others say you can use wood, even others say I should just stop braaing all together because I have no idea what I'm doing.

Nobody should ever stop braaing - EVER! Whatever your poison, as long as you can manage the temperature using the vents. A hardwood that does more coal less flame is your best bet. The softwoods are all about flame and short-lasting coals. Let the hardwood get to the coal stage first though or it will smoulder, smoke, stink and die.

Amen to that.

I love braaing too much to see other not enjoy it and we where all beginners at some stage. I've learn't over the years to always ask other braaiers questions and listen to what they say. Learn't a lot even just through observation and shutting my trap when I think the braai master is wrong.

And never question the Braai Master, never!

Best braai for me consists of beer, tongs, nude girls in the background and a fat Springbok steak on the coals!

Better braai.

I hate threads like this. Always make me hungry. Mid-week braai, here I come.

I have just moved into a complex and I need to purchase a braai stand. I am all for cutting a barrel in half and shoving it in the ground and using a grate over that. However, if I were to purchase a webber type deal without spending a million bucks whats the cheapest option that works well and wont disintegrate after my first braai?

I have been told that Bush baby stuff is quite cheap. What are you guys braai'ing on?

Also I would prefer to stay away from gas.

Anyone remember that Castle ad with the okes braaing on the top a building in the US? Best braai for me consists of beer, tongs, Springbok Nude Girls in the background and a fat steak on the coals!

The words "Castle" and "beer" should not be used in the same sentence. Similar to "hospital food" and "elevator music".

I would love some advice...

I have moved into a new house a while ago and there is a (very basic wood / charcoal) built in braai on the patio.

Unfortunately it is worthless, it smokes up the entire enclosed patio and it is very uncomfortable to use.

I am looking to replace it with a proper built in braai which can run on either LP Gas or wood.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The only reason it is smoking must be the chimney that is probably not causing enough draft. So it is being blocked from the natural breeze. Remove the standard "vane" from the top and install ons of those industrial "spinners". As soon as it catches the slightest updraft it starts spinning, building momentum and eventually runs from the updraft it causes itself. Carefull it doesn't suck the chops up there...

As I am sure you can see from the attached picture, my problem is slightly bigger than that...
