PARIS: The brain neurons of liberals and conservatives fire differently when confronted with tough choices, suggesting that some political divides may be hard-wired, according to a study released yesterday.

Aristotle may have been more on the mark than he realised when he said that man is by nature a political animal.

Dozens of previous studies have established a strong link between political persuasion and certain personality traits.

Conservatives tend to crave order and structure in their lives, and are more consistent in the way they make decisions.

Liberals, by contrast, show a higher tolerance for ambiguity and complexity, and adapt more easily.

Using electroencephalographs (EEGs), the researchers examined activity in a part of the brain - the anterior cingulate cortex - that is strongly linked with conflict monitoring.

The match-up was unmistakable: liberals showed "significantly greater conflict-related neural activity" when the hypothetical situation called for an unscheduled break in routine.

Conservatives, however, were less flexible, refusing to deviate from old habits "despite signals that this … should be changed".

Whether that is good or bad, of course, depends on one's perspective: one could interpret the results to mean that liberals are nimble-minded and conservatives rigid and stubborn.

Or one could, with equal justice, conclude that wishy-washy liberals don't stick to their guns, while conservatives are steadfast and loyal.

As to the more intriguing question of which comes first, the patterns in neuron activity or the political orientation, Amodio is reluctant to hazard a guess.

"The neural mechanisms for conflict monitoring are formed early in childhood," and are probably rooted in part in our genetic heritage, he said.

"But even if genes may provide a blueprint for more liberal or conservative orientations, they are shaped substantially by one's environment over the course of development," he added. - Sapa-AFP

I'm sure Alan will love the part about liberals :D ;)

Should read:

"lack of brain waves separate Conservatives from Liberals"

hehe

Good humored jibes aside...:p
If I read this correctly liberals are more adaptable to change. What is it that separates humans from the other animals again? Oh ja, adaptability.

More human than you (conservatives) man. :D

Liberals have brain waves?
We don't have brain waves: we have epiphanies and symphonies. What do you have?

...the ultimate extension of a disconnected, Greco-Roman, Western, egocentric, compartmentalized, reductionist, fragmented, linear thought process

What separates either of those groups from libertarians? :p
Libertarians would like to be liberal but are too hung up about it :)

Libertine Conservatives
For as long as I’ve been a libertarian, I’ve been hearing a common accusation that libertarians are nothing more than Republicans who want to party and smoke pot. Unfortunately, this perverse categorization not only gets traction among cynical leftists and puritanical rightwingers. No, I have actually heard some self-described libertarians more than willingly adopt this description for themselves. Party-going conservatism is libertarianism, they say with pride.

The most striking thing about libertine conservatives is their hypocrisy.

Machine must have been faulty

Typical alanf: immediately blames it on anything but his own error.

Yeah adapt to going backwards
Backwards? Forwards? There's that linear universe again. :)

Pfft as apposed to blaming everything on Dubya

"despite signals that this … should be changed".

According to who? A liberal :D

If a conservative is "refusing to deviate from old habits" it's because if it ain't broke don't fix it

Backwards? Forwards? There's that linear universe again. :)

See there's your problem :o

Backwards, forwards? Not broke does not mean there is not better, newer, or alternate. Yup, called progress and choice.

See there's your problem :o
Neither the planet, stars, nor universe is flat: or linear. It is apparently your problem: you make it mine.

//though of course I take full responsibility for that: unlike you who takes none.

Seems the article is correct: alanf is [-]displaying[/-] admitting all the characteristics!? :D

In my experience conservatism is all about being self centered. I have never met a conservative who would not put his religion, his VOLK, his language, his traditions above that of others sharing the same country and world with him.

The fact that they often use religion to justify this self centerdness makes it even more dangerous. You only have to look at someone like George W. Bush to see this in action. In our own country the Verwoerds and Bothas were striking examples of how dangerous the world becomes when people like that grab political power.

Does this mean they need regular baths and to be walked daily?

that is why I like Jack Russel's. You never know what they are gonna try next. Last week my friend's one got stuck in a empty server chassis, but the Idiot did not take pictures. :D
