Hey guys,

Just got a quote of R150 per disk. Sounds reasonable right?

Well it's not cheap.. I don't usually skim discs but to put it into perspective, for some good quality discs on a Corsa you'd pay R500 for a set (2 discs, left and right). That is new discs, not skimming.

Have you tried calling: Partman (Menlyn), Autozone, Midas, Goldwagen and BMW (parts department) asking how much they charge for a set of new discs on that car? Then you can compare the price of a disc to the price of skimming the disc, percentage wise.

a set is usually about 1k. i am so broke now-I will rather do a Powerbrake kit later in the year if i can afford it. the price i got was at a wheel centre opposite spur, menlyn on garsfontein rd.

Just be careful prices range widely. I was quoted close to R800 for a set of discs on a Corsa also. Then got Alfa discs from Part-man for R500. Always call a couple of places...

I had my bmw's 2 disc's skimmed last year for R300 so it sounds spot on to me. new discs will surely cost you at least double that per disc.

R920 for front R1100 for rear

Eish, ok, get your point. Have you tried calling a couple of brake places to ask what they would charge to skim the discs? Then again, maybe you shouldn't go to the cheapest place because skimming = sanding down the disc and you don't want a complete Muppet sanding down the disc and ruining it.

quite true. but they usually use a machine with a diamond head which moves slowly from the inner to the outer of the disk while the disk rotates. i have seen that done off the car but these guys are gonna do it on the car. I assume its the same process. they will also check if the rears also need skimming.

I was busy posting and took my time but I see I was almost right, and remember that price will not include labour.

Yeah, prolly another R500 for labour to replace both sets.

Now just imagine what BMW would charge, new disc's front and back with new pad's and sensors, easy R9-10k

They see you coming on that one :( I usually replace them myself, pretty much the same procedure on all cars, not very difficult. I'd feel guilty charging R500 to replace discs.

I'll do it for R450 :D :p

It's expensive, but not THAT expensive. The sensors are pretty cheap, R120 for the front ones, and the rear ones are slightly more expensive, R160 I think. But you don't even need them, because the alert light lights up WAAAY before the pads are actually worn down.

Be my guest and call them :p
