So like had to go to a braai this afternoon. Guy says you can help yourself to his stash. Half a bottle of KWV 15 year old later ... :p

Expect the price of Klipdrift Premium to rise soon.

In a boost for Distell’s reputation as a producer of world-class brandies, the popular Klipdrift Premium has been named as 2016’s World’s Best Brandy at the World Brandy Awards.

The World Brandy Awards panel pronounced Klipdrift Premium as having “aromas of milk chocolate, sponge cake and caramel”, “gentle woodiness” and “a sweet, fruity finish”.

“The award is confirmation that blended brandies are improving in quality and is proof that there is indeed gold in every drop of Klipdrift,” said Klipdrift Marketing Manager Genius Mnywabe. The latest award follows a string of international accolades that the company has won in recent months. Late last year, Distell won the International Wine & Spirit Competition’s (IWSC) Distiller of the Year award; the IWSC Best Worldwide Brandy trophy for the Van Ryn’s 12 Year Old potstill produced according to the traditional technique made famous in Cognac, as well as a cache of gold medals for brandies in the company’s Klipdrift, Richelieu and Oude Meester ranges. Distell also won Brandy Producer of the Year at the 2015 New York International Spirits Competition, last November.

And I got given a bottle for my birthday in Oct.

I am a KWV man actually, while I have the 3, 5, 10 and 12 year old bottles in the cupboard I usually go for the 10 year old. And I commit the unholy sin of mixing it with coke. The 12 year old is one of my favourite, so smooth and what a smell.

Only if you drink Wellington & Coke.

:D

OK, so let me post something sensible out of respect for your thread here peeps...

CAVEAT: I know nothing about brandy.

Best brandy I have ever tasted was at Backsberg wine tasting.

You go through the various wines and your last taste they give you a choice between an insanely expensive wine and their Backsberg 18 year old brandy.

Amazing.

I don't think I actually swallowed anything - it all seemed to have vaporised before I got the chance. First time I have had that experience, someone there mentioned that it was more of a cognac in the end.

Brandy has a lot of stigma attached to it mainly due to the klippies and coke crowd getting trashed and then looking for a fight.

Just like any spirit: Whisky, Brandy, Vodka, Tequila even Rum, you get the cheap and nasty stuff that's good for mixing and you get higher quality aged products that are more refined and are supposed to be enjoyed neat in "marginal" quantities.

The older potstil brandies tend to have a lower alcohol content (38%) so they should definitely feel smoother and easier to drink. The time spent in the barrel also adds a lot of layers to the nose and flavour adding to the overall experience.

Stupid question but how do you guys drink your brandy?

My general rule: 3 years you can happily mix with coke. Anything that's 100% potstil is generally 5 years and up and that I drink neat. Just like whisky you can add a drop of water if you like (must).

My exception to that rule is that I have enjoyed KWV 5 & 10 with coke, but mainly because a friend had quota and lots of it, but did feel a little guilty about mixing the 10. :D

^ This.

Viceroy still one of my favourite to mix. R90 at PnP.

5yo potstill, 43%. Quite sharp on the finish. Would probably do well with a drop of water.

Edit: So actually not a potstill. From the Web.

Pure double distilled pot still brandy, matured in oak barrels for five years and blended with unmatured grape spirits.

I think it is bit of a novelty thing. Bought it from the source in Tulbagh. Seems like it was a hobby project.

That was my point, you've got a small batch of Brandy and an opportunity to do something special, why go and thin it down just to get a few extra bottles?
