Bright Meteor Joburg

Aquilids? Pegasids? Cassiopeiids? Beta Turids? /shrug we plow through so much **** daily I'm constantly in awe we've made it this far... either way, if it was, count yourself lucky, seeing a daytime one usually requires radar:D

Report it to the Astronomical Society of SA: http://assa.saao.ac.za/contact-us/report-a-sighting/

Remember to include the date and time, your location (GPS coordinates if possible), how the object moved relative to compass points and the horizon, how bright it was (relative to the bright stars or Moon), how long the event lasted, if any colours were seen, and if any sounds were heard.

If you saw it in daylight, it must be bright:
Did you perhaps observe a fireball (a meteor event with brightness equal to or greater than visual magnitude -3)? Download the standardised Fireball Report Form, fill in as many of the details as you can, and e-mail it to the Shallow Sky Section Director, who will pass it on to the Meteor Specialist.

I'm pretty sure I saw what I saw.

And yes, just a cigarette was smoked.:)

But, for all it was extremely bright, it was also very quick. If you weren't looking at the sky you wouldn't have seen it, probably.

I've also been googling around, with no luck, but that's not very surprising I guess, given the brevity of the incident.

Oh well - something to remember into my old age then. I've swept the sky for comets, timed meteor showers for years of my life and never before seen one in broad daylight.

South delta Aquarid, most probably. Although the radiant was a bit off.

South Delta Aquarids is quite a solid shower that started today. Around 20 an hour for the next two weeks...

Highly likely that it was a big boy you saw...

EDIT: Runs longer than I thought:

The shower runs on a six-week cycle every year, from 12th July – 23rd August. The peak night for viewing will be the 28th July, through to the 29th.

If that turns out to be true I may have to conjure some respect for Elon Musk, it would be the only saving grace of an otherwise proper knob.
 
It was there and gone far too fast for pictures unfortunately.

It was incredibly fortunate that I walk around looking at the sky most of the time anyway.

Which is probably why I have so many bruises, as well.
