Who discovered X-Rays? Marie Curie I hear you say... I mean she got a Nobel prize and everything
... but ever heard of William Roentgen, the poor b@stard with few to zero marketing skillz? ;)

Gates will probably acquire sainthood, the lack of philantrophy stopped Jobs from having the same distinction.

As for the Google guys (assuming you're talking about Page & Brin), I really haven't heard much of them recently. Has anybody else?

Actually, Marie Curie discovered Radium and radiation. Roentgen discovered the effect of x-rays (and I hope everyone knows this because in my language his surname is used as a word for x-rays) who also got a Nobel for his discovery. I do think your example case is not the same as what's intended.

Page and Brin don't stand on a stage in polo neck, jeans and sneakers in front of thousands of fanboys everytime they have to announce something with built in obsolescence...yet our lives have been affected and aided more by Google than and iPod, iPhone or iMac

People love showmanship & marketing.

Dennis Ritchie died yesterday, he probably did more for computing (& Apple) but I guess very few people would know who he is/was.

Without Dennis Ritchie, most modern programming languages would not exist..... iOS would most probably be created using BASIC
 
Bill, Steve and Woz. The 3 fathers of modern day personal computing.

And that is huge.
 
I`m not an apple fan, but give credit where it is due. He played a part in bringing the world into the information age, and that is huge.
 
He made water into wine by turning tech into cool.
