Broadband in SA: another scathing report

TJoker you equation is flawed. Vaseline is optional in fact Telkom and Govt prefer not using it

When it came to Internet penetration rates South Africa did not fare well. According to the report the country showed a compound Internet subscriber growth rate of 12.98% over the last five years and has only 3.22 million Internet users. This constitutes an Internet penetration rate of 6.59%, well below developed economies and lower than many developing economies.

South Africa did not fare much better in terms of fixed broadband subscribers. South Africa only had 1.3 million fixed broadband subscribers in 2008, and with a broadband penetration rate of 2.67% the country does not compete favourably against the developed world.

Where did they get this from?

According to Telkom's Mar 2009 results there were 548 015 active ADSL lines. So maybe now we're at 650K.

Don't know of any other fixed broadband technology avaliable in the country ???
 
LMAO.. i'd like to see Teleco CEO's justify their cost again..(combo this with their pay packages)
 
I have come to learn that any new internet service that comes into this country saying they are going to save the day are all a bunch of BS - Neotel, Seacom, Broadband over power lines (remember that one), the work in progress AWACS (sp?) undersea cables and whatever is still in the works - no delivery!

the only change that came was Afrihost, and they did it with their freaken marketing budget (and is still going), not a billion rand fibre optic undersea cable

Wrong. Delivery is straight to the SP's bank account.

Even if afrihost (who is my current ISP) lowers their prices/gig to R5 it will still be EXTREMELY overpriced. Check my sig

Not a fair comparison.

For broadband pricing, scale is a major factor. The more customers you have, more you can share/contend capacity/infrastructure without any negative impact to end-user experience. Thus the more customers you have the cheaper it becomes per user.

SA has roughly 650K ADSL lines, while the UK has about 13.9M lines. Unfortunately , we'll never reach their cost per user.
