Broadband prices should drop drastically

This article is a fabrication !

Telkom says that they "welcome competition" ? If that's not a comment from fairyland, I don't know what is.....................
Is they had competition, then Rueben September would be earning hwat he's worth - Zim $ 19 Million and not R 19 Million...........

then drop the prices... you idiot. stop talking about and make it happen... you have the power!!!
I understand your sentiments, but it is not that easy. The Vodacom CEO did discuss what is needed for this to happen, and one of the problems is backhaul capacity. Even if Vodacom/MTN/Telkom wanted to drop prices significantly now it will cause big problems – mass uptake will mean that that there is not nearly enough transmission capacity and service levels will plummet.

The only solution is more backhaul bandwidth capacity at lower prices, and that is why all of these companies are investing in fiber networks.

I do strongly suspect that we get news leakages from a parallel universe, and this confirms it all the more... :( :D

But, in reality, I really want them to get off their high horses and DO something about it. We've had enough talk, we NEED some ACTION, not talk...

*sigh*

I think guys like Vodacom, MTN, Neotel and even Telkom are indeed trying to solve the problem. They are all building new/better fiber networks to solve the current problem of a lack of affordable bandwidth. The problem is obviously here because of Telkom’s previous monopoly, but what else can these guys do now apart from building their own fixed line networks? This is unfortunately something that takes a lot of time...

You're going soft rpm.

What else can be done? Vodacom/MTN is hamstrung by a lack of transmission capacity – causing all sorts of problems. I am all for lower prices and better services, but without backhaul capacity this is unlikely to happen.

why don't vodacom start then by dropping there price one would think rest of the *click* will follow

"Knott-Craig said that one of the biggest problems in the local telecoms market was the shortage of transmission network capacity. This, he said, was a result of regulation and politics which gave Telkom a de-facto fixed-line monopoly."

Hear Hear.....

How many times have we heard this???
Its getting to sound like a stuck record...
Talk is cheap...Broadband is expensive... So stop talking the talk and Walk the walk...

This is something people in this country do not seem to understand. You cannot magically click your fingers or wave your wand and solve problems which exist (the Eskom situation comes to mind here too, and the fact that after 10+ years of freedom we still do not have a perfect country). These things take time. Getting infrastructure in place takes time. We should be happy that we can actually see this infrastructure being put in place in front of our eyes. This is not all talk it is happening around us.

I for one do not feel this article is proof of RPM becoming soft. It is being sensible. If you can see something being done surely credit should be given when it is due. Perhaps some of us have become so used to moaning that we cannot see this.

I have to agree. South Africans have lost faith in "talks" as they almost never produce results. These are the same comments that have been around for way too long.
