My boss says that a PDC is worth as much as toilet paper until you have real money in your hands. Same thing here - until they actually achieve what they say they'll do it means absolutely zero.

Alec Erwin? Isnt that the same guy who said there was loose nut(or bolt) at koeberg, and also told some schmucks in london that affirmative action is effectively dead?

On the one hand they are blocking Seacom at every step link and on the other the claim "There was no evidence that the market would step forward."

Buncha wan.kers.

65% ibiwisi. Plus 65% by 2010 is not going to cut it. By that time half of Europe and US is going to be on fiber local loops anyway.

Maybe he means that they'll charge us 65% of today's prices in 3 or 4 years time

I agree RPM. Government never tested whether business would drop prices in a competative environment. I fear Thabo Mbeki and Ivy are using the same consultants that feed them AIDS junk for their telecoms decisions...

I hear they are using Zanu PF advisors.

Another thing that concerns me - why aren't the private sector more vocal on the matter? Surely they have the financial backing to challenge these ridiculous statements about them in court? I mean why does MyADSL always have to pick up on these anomalies - it's their future at stake too! RPM is there any chance of perhaps contacting some of the major providers for comment? Or maybe Duncan doing an article on this particular issue of the private sector not being given a fair chance? Or even a combination of both? We cannot let this continue otherwise everyone might just think that a state-controlled telecoms sector is not a bad thing.

2 points:

1) IBIWISI
2) For a country that is hundreds of percents overcharged as it is even 65% is minimal.

Any drop in price is welcome, but I don't see it solving the bigger issue of removing the government from it's position of power over SA telecoms. Quite the opposite in fact.

Before you get too excited, you have to see the bigger picture. This is a rather pathetic marketing campaign to try to justify why the government intends to ban all private international submarine cable initiatives:

There are very real parallels with Zimbabwe here. It's funny how one doesn't notice when it's happening at home.

Don't expect anything to happen soon, if ever.

Neotel, which is due to launch formally within the next few weeks.

I am yet to see a single Neotel vehicle anywhere on the road. I don't for a moment believe that they will be operating within the next few weeks. What happened to the mybroadband members who were supposed to be included by Neotel in the trial? Is it so crap that they are stunned into silence, or did Neotel actually sock them? Rpm?

Still waiting... I think Neotel may be struggling with InfraCo and Government. I really pity them being reliant on InfraCo.

Asked if the Cabinet had unanimously accepted his view, he said: “A cabinet decision is a cabinet decision. No minister should comment on differences.”
- Thabo's team slogan - go ask the previous deputy min of Health.

Back to this topic..Neither Ivy nor Alec has an inkling of a clue as to what needs to be done to get the ball rolling.

Private sector can achieve a hell of a lot if government would step to the side and allow them to compete. But in this big brother playpen where nepotism is rife there is no way to enable true competition with the likes of Icasa, Ivy and Alec around.
