Forgive me if this is an old issue with you pro's out there - but need to ask this question. If I'm using a usb modem to connect to the internet. Is it possible for my broadband to be stollen? Can someone use my cap to surf the net on my account? If yes can I prevent it?

1. Update the router/modem firmware, and use strong passwords on the router itself.
2. Run the router/modem in bridged mode and employ a good, strong firewall.
3. Or just keep it switched off :D

Thanks appreciate your quick response - just to be clear, so it is possible? Can someone hack in and surf on my account and leave me with a list of unsavory sites which cause me to shy away from investigating it further?

Does this apply to an MTN USB modem?

@bowledover: Does anyone else have access to your SIM card?

MTN USB modem - I don't think anyone else has access. I leave it connected most times, sometimes overnight - never saw the harm I guess?

MTN APNs are NAT'd, so don't stress about it.

Watch that leaving it connected overnight business...that can blow up in your face really easy. Sometimes PCs get infected and the virus downloads a bunch of stuff. Can cost you thousands easily.

Not sure what your first line meant? But you've been a great help - thanks

But I believe it's harder than broadband (referring to home Internet, ADSL, DSL) theft though, to steal mobile (HSDPA, 3G, EDGE, GPRS) bandwidth. Unless ofcoarse as above-mentioned, virsuses may cause havoc, not that it's under someone's control. My sister has a usb modem (since '03), never experienced something like that. I might be wrong but that's the way I view it.
