Browsing with Blackberry and Vodacom BIS

My questions are probably off topic, not being 3G related:

If I understand correctly, the BIS is being provided by Vodacom for those of us who don't have access to a Microsoft Exchange Server with Blackberry Enterprise Service. My question – is the same functionality available (i.e. the ability to sync one's Calendar (and Contacts) wirelessly and browse the internet), if connected to the Vodacom BIS as when connected to a BES? This appears to be the case if one looks at the explanation of BIS on the Vodacom4me website, but I need to be absolutely sure about this (especially begin able to browse html web pages), before I get the BB.

Furthermore, has anyone tried using the BB browser to access First National Bank's online banking service known as Bankit, ("connected" to the internet through the Vodacom BIS service/server)?

Hey 949BFN,

That is the major diffs between BIS and BES, BIS has a lot less then BES. AFAIR you can't sync the calendar+Contacts, what will happen is that the BIS servers keep polling your POP/IMAP account and then sends you the messages (emails) based on that. You should still be able to surf etc. as per the normal BB.

Tx for the info. Wonder if any of the online BES servers (like myblueberry.com / myblackberry.us) would work and be a solution for those of us not having access to BES servers.

Long story short , it is like a personal / mini BES server with some more features but not all like BPS or BES that allow you to "control" the Blackberry handheld.

Blackberry Unite - supports 5 users
Blackberry Professional - supports 30 users
Blackberry Enterprise - supports from 1 to puhlenty , upto 1000 or more users.

Maybe you must write us a BB FAQ?
 
Not a problem but a lot of the info that I got is from the general www.

If there is space on the forum then I don't mind uploading approx 51.4mb of Blackberry FAQ in pdf and word format.

I have a question which has never been answered with a concrete yes or no, despite numerous attempts to get such an answer.

When you browse with the BB browser you run through the BB network and don't pay any additional bandwidth charges but what happens when you browse with Opera Mini? Are you then outside of the BB network?

I would really like to know the answer to this.
 
Good question.

According to other reasoning OM should use the "internet" apn but under Options -> Advanced Options -> TCP -> if the APN field is blank then the "berry" is using the "blackberry" apn.

Now the only place to set the apn for OM is in that menu below and unless any other apn is set in that config then OM will use the default on the handheld.

Testing this on my MTN supplied BB Curve 8900 with my Vodacom sim in , I can confirm that it works.

My package is a Talk 500s with a Blackberry Bolt-On (I do not have a bona-fide vanilla offered Blackberry Talk package)
