I am finishing Matric this year and am currently in the process in applying for universities.

I have been conditionally admitted to study BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering and i have not received word back about my Bsc Comp Sci. But i do not know which one to chose, i am torn between them.

I enjoy Math and Physics and i do well in them. I enjoy work like circuits and electrodynamics. However i also enjoy coding and working with computers and networking.

Can anyone give me some more differences between the two. What are job prospects like for both Fields , I don't mind much about salary differences just a long as i enjoy what i do.

Thanks

Go for the BEng :) We are in dire need of good engineers, and if you dont like what you are doing you can always get into SAP :)

Robotics at UCT...

I dont know its a tough decision, but many people that I know are trying to get out of dev...me too.

If you dont have any clear favorite I would go for the engineering degree its much easier to get into IT with an engineering degree than it is to get into engineering with an IT degree.

B.Eng indeed! As an engineer you'll get many opportunities to program software and work with hardware. Also the scope of work is much wider in engineering.

Whichever one is more interesting to you. You won't go wrong with any of them.

Sorry what is SAP?

Thanks everyone for the quick replies :)
The most mind numbingly boring thing ever. It's something you go in to if you're chasing cash. And if you get a hard on for acronyms. Some people do genuinely like it, but they're weird.

Grab the hand books for the relative faculties and take a look at the courses in those two degrees. See which ones you would prefer doing. Most places put them online. I was signed up for electrical and electronic engineering at uct and then found my brothers old commerce book and looked at the courses and decided that's what i rather wanted to do about 3 weeks before term started :) caused a few hiccups to say the least but worked out in the end.

Electrical and Computer Engineering which combines the principles of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science for the purpose of developing computer based systems.

If after first year you decide you're not that into engineering you can switch to pure computer science.

Do the B.Eng, you can still do programming with that behind you name, actually you can go and work in just about any field with a eng background.

Not sure where you planning on studying, but here in Pretoria you have the option of studying computer engineering, similar to electronic engineering, just with some extra focus on the IT world.

I also looked at those two options when starting studying and picked engineering as with an elec eng degree you can get all the BSc jobs as well as all the engineering ones generally so there are a lot more options. Also engineers get a higher salary sometimes than pure BSc guys.

Also definitely take the IT branch of Elec eng. Most universities offer it now. At wits its called "Information eng".

Certain Universities call it a Bachelors of Engineering (B.Eng) others call it BSc Engineering, same thing, different name.

I study B.Eng. Computer at UP. Final year now and I can vouch that you do the best of both worlds (coding + electronics). B.Eng is generally a more difficult degree than BSc IT, but the reward is also greater.

Odd. At wits the BSc Eng is significantly harder than B. Eng and carries more weight.
