Bsc in Computing with UNISA

Word of advice for module choice

Check the exam timetable.

Nothing sucks quite like writing 3 exams on consecutive days.

I'll plus1 this.

I walked out of one exam (11.30am to 1.30pm), then started studying for the next day's 8am exam. I studied through the night to finish the course content. Luckily it was only ICT2622, so it wasn't hard, but it was a crapload of work.

Reviving an old (but relevant) thread here...

Guys I've just been accepted to study BSC Computing in 2019 at Unisa.

I will be doing this part time and my company might assist with the payment.

I'm planning on doing these modules in semester 1, to get my feet wet:
COS1501 - Theoretical Computer Science
COS1511 - Introduction to Programming I
COS1521 - Computer Systems: Fundamental Concepts
MAT1503 - Linear Algebra

(maybe, but not likely)
INF1505 - Introduction to Business Information Systems

I want to get the most boring stuff out the way first.

I'm trying to calculate my study fees. I can find the MAT1503 textbook on Takealot, but that's about it. The 2019 fees aren't available yet, but I just need a ball park figure.

Based on this pricing, what do I register for?
"Module / Paper" or "Module" and what is the difference?

Thanks!

Good luck with the degree.
Next year will be my last year in the same degree. (also working full time and studying)
All of those modules are pretty straightforward and I'm sure you'll be able to do all 5.
The only one I struggled with was MAT1503 - just couldn't wrap my head around those concepts.
I believe you will be paying for the Module / Paper costing for each of the modules you register for - that looks to be about the costing I've been paying all along.

Send me a PM with the books required, I might be able to help with a few of them if they're still the same.

Hope this helps.

Does UNISA offer math refresher courses?

Edit: Actually a more pertinent question. What type of maths is needed for a computer science. I gather Algebra is important.

You can get a CS degree via unisa with barely any maths at all.

Personally I'd reccommend you take as much maths as you can, stats too. Hell double major in maths/stats while you're at it. :p

More specifically 2nd year linear algebra, multivariable calculus, differential equations and numerical methods will have you in pretty good shape for some more advanced stuff like machine learning.

Agreed, when you do Honors the Math requirements show and if you don't have a mathematical background you'll be in for a not so fun time
