I keep getting a STOP Error 0x0000008E when booting into windows, safe mode works fine. I have searched the web for 2 days without any luck. I have updated windows, cleaned the registry using ccleaner, scanned for viruses and checked the ram no luck. Is there anything I can do to save the pc or must I format and reinstall.

Reset bios, try again, check disk (bad sector check) try again.

What version of Windoze(XP, Vista,7)??? XP SP1 had this problem a lot, if I remember correctly. Try BIOS update from motherboard vendor site also.

Try using windows restore to a time before that happend. Usually fixes alot of issues :)

I used to get that when my old laptop used to overheat (when I was running multiple apps etc). It just used to shut down with that error. I used to wait a few mins for the laptop to cool down and then switch it on again - worked fine then. Try cleaning the inside of the pc from dust and stuff and also the fan. Not sure if thats your problem but maybe worth a try.
