The ASUS X550JK is about the best you're going to get for that kind of money. The GTX 950M isn't going to max out everything because it has DDR3 memory, but it'll be just fine for 1080p and medium settings for most of the games you'll play.

Not if you're keen on actually playing many of the latest games. Intel's drivers are OK, but their game optimisation team operates at about the same pace as ATi and NVIDIA did back in the early 2000's. Fallout 4 is still unplayable on Broadwell and Skylake graphics because of poor driver optimisation.
"Fallout" 4 is unplayable due to being terrible. But I get your point. However, most things are unplayable on a cheap laptop GPU too. 950M should be fine.

Not really, the same thing happens with Skyrim on Skylake, but there it's a frame pacing issue on some systems which haven't gotten the PCI-E frequency fix. The driver optimisation is just not there yet, because Intel focuses on other stuff like MOBAs.
is this still a good option for between R10-15K?
or is there something that can deliver just as much yet better for few grand more?
i was looking at macbook pro but exchange rate has delivered a blow in terms of retails
Had a look at the pricing the other day, almost fall on my back.

but haven't there been quite a lot of not so great things said about this unit?
as mentioned the exchange rate has made me decide to maybe skip the MBP as its now pushing 27-30K
so hoping to get something more along the lines of 15-20K

My dad owns one, I set it up myself. When it comes back with him from sea, I'll run a bunch of benchmarks on it to serve as my reference for the Acer Predator review I'll be doing soon. It's a fine laptop, and only suffers from some odd behaviour from NVIDIA Optimus switching when you close the lid while the notebook is running a game on a second display attached through HDMI. The BIOS automatically clocks everything down to keep temperatures in line, and as soon as you open the display a little bit to activate the screen, the clock speeds ramp back up to normal values.
It is otherwise a beast. Trackpad is so-so, but that's normal for any laptop that isn't a Dell XPS 13 or a Macbook. Battery life is also pretty decent. IPS display, backlit keyboard, slim profile, metal shell, user-accessible RAM, battery, and hard drive - it's all good value.
Edit: Sound is also great, it has good quality speakers and little distortion as you approach 90% volume.
