I am basically on a budget and want to build up a okeish pc to play star citizen. Currently on a Intel Core 2 2.55Ghz, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 420 1GB DDR3 Gpu etc... I was thinking of maybe getting a Amd Athlon or a A series APU. The Athlons are quite cheap, not sure how good they are. On the motherboard side of things I would probably go for a board that at least supports DDR4, non gaming ECC RAM about 8GB. Would love a ok budget board where I can upgrade the CPU at a later stage. The A8 APU at this current stage is the number one contender.

Minimum or recommended specs for Star Citizen?

Minimum or recommended specs for Star Citizen?

From the site:
- Windows 7 service pack 1 (64 bit) or Windows 8 (64 bit)

- DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM

- Quad core CPU

- 8GB Memory

Keep in mind that these are estimated system requirements and may change for the final release of the game.

From Reddit:
The Minimum system requirements are: ( Source: "Windows 7 or 8 64-bit, Dual Core CPU (Intel: Core2 Duo 2.4Ghz, AMD: Phenom X2 - However a Quad core is highly recommended) 8GB of RAM, NVidia Geforce 460GTX, AMD Radeon HD5850 (DirectX 11 only)".
The Recommended system requirements are: i5 2500, i7 2600, 2700 or better with a GTX 670 or greater (DX 11 only).
For a smooth experience at Maximum settings at 1080p, a R9 290x, GTX 780 (or 970) will be required (a GTX 770/680/R9 280x will likely therefore likely achieve high comfortably). For a decent 4K experience, a pair of mid-high end cards (680/770 7970/280x or better) or a future high end card (GTX 1080 or R9 390x etc) will be required.

Not sure yet. Life being what it is I might have R5000 to spend next month or nothing, depends on what breaks in the house or car or what must be replaced lol. But probably in the R5000 area.

What parts do you have, that you want to use in the new build?

For instance, can you carry on using your existing hard drive, PSU and case/chassis?

So you looking for a new board, CPU, memory and GPU for about R 5k that will run it decently?

have drives, screen, thinking of using the onboard R7 part of the APU maybe or my current Nvidia card.

Thinking of the board, cpu and ram at this stage. I figured a A8 series APU will perform better than a core 2. I wanted to get a secondhand core 2 quad, but not to sure.

The limiting factor to your budget though is going to be a Cheapish Mobo that supports DDR4. Seeinga s you have about R 5k give or take, maybe the best decent Mobo you can find, ok'ish CPU (AMD) and them RAM.

Does it need to be AMD though? Farking hard to find a decent AMD board that supports DDR4. Loads of LGA1150+ boards. :o

http://www.evetech.co.za/components/intel-amd-based-bundle-packs-42.aspx Was eying the A8 just now, some FX chips just under or over 4k. That I3 also looks good. I joined the wug in 2008, before that I thought I was the shiz regarding computers, got downsized a lot in the pc tech ego department and lost touch with pc hardware lol.

MSI H170 - R 2 399

3.6 Dual Core Skylake CPU - R 1 861

8GB DDR4 2400mhz - R 859.00

The CPU will work, but sure as hell will need to be replaced later. However, the board will be pretty future proof. When you have another 2 -3k laying around at a later stage you can get a nice CPU (If you want new, or buy from that guy on carbonite)

Above setup is all NEW though: R 5 119.00 (excluding shipping)

Why such an expensive motherboard? You can find a 1151 motherboard for around R1300.

There is really absolutely no point in paying that much for a board, especially not for the OP.

Rather spend R1300 on a board now, and use your old GPU for the next couple of months. When the new Nvidia and AMD GPUs come out, you should have a bit more money available to buy a new GPU.

He wants DDR4
