Hi
Hopefully next year I'll be studying mechanical engineering at UJ and i was wondering what would be the best budget laptop that will be sufficient for me to use to get my school work done, maybe allow me to browse the net and watch and download the occasional YouTube video.

Im not really great with technology so please be a little bit detailed in your answers.

Thanks a million in advance

For a lighweight jobs and multimedia it is the cheapest one with a modern Celeron that comes with a full set of modern hardware video codecs. A normal hard drive or SATA SSD can be added later when budget allows. Available from HiFiCorp and the one with 2 years warranty from IC: https://www.incredible.co.za/ilife-zed-air-2-notebook

Whats your budget? More or less:

R3000 - R4000 = Celeron
R4500 - R5500 = Pentium?
R5500- R6000 = i3

Do you (or someone else here) know if you will be running computationally intensive applications, or can you use the computer labs for that?

Something important to note, is that a lot of the laptops that go on sale are old stock, so try and get the latest generation CPU. Check what your budget is, then check whats on sale and compare the CPU against a list. Each generation usually has improvements over the previous gen.

E.g. look under mobile processors.
