Budget mountain bike

a budget proper mountain bike is not 8-10k, you can get a titan from around R4k, you rich people and your tendencies :p

if he doesn't actually want to use it on trails and just on the round the neighbourhood then a game bike is fine.

Yep as above, budget MTB is about 8-10k.

The Raleigh one will hurt ya bum :p That's more of a school bike really.

Check out http://www.thehubsa.co.za/ for some secondhand deals :) Friend of mine got a really nice, almost new Giant for R6k.

guys....you not really helping...
my budget is R2000....

We are helping...your budget is too low for a decent entry level mountain bike.

Sure you can get one for under R2000, but it won't be decent. It will be heavy, unreliable and hellishly uncomfortable.

You should try looking at a second hand bike then.
I got mine off Gumtree, a second hand Silverback stride 10 for R2500.
I bought it a year ago and it's still going strong.
Also try the hubsa classifieds.

ok thanks for the input, i will not buy anything.

All the guys here gave valid advice, I've been riding for years and completed joBerg2c 3 times. My sadle costs more than your budget. So take a look at the hubsa increase your budget with another 2 k and get a bike that isn't going to put you off mountain biking forever.

That's the thing. It's not a cheap hobby. My tyres alone cost me R2k.

If you're going to buy a cheap bike you will have issues with reliability and comfort, which will put you off of mountain biking

2nd hand will get you something 10x better than game bike.

You get Raliegh that is sold at game and the likes, and then you get Raliegh that sells at bike shops.
The 2 are very different.
One is an actual recognized bike brand while the other is el cheapo all the way.

American Raleigh is top class but costs a fair bit.

Rather try to find an entry level Schwinn or similar.
You can get one for around R2500 that should serve you fairly well if you look after it.

I've been put off cycling totally due to the cheap-bike-seat-hurt-my-goodies-that-hurt-continuously-for-a-whole-week injury!
this post tell me there is hope then?

Don't buy bicycles from Game or Makro. They're just shyte.

Go to a Cycle Lab or Solomon's, or what have you. Considering your budget I'd also strongly suggest looking 2nd hand. Can get much better value.

can anyone advise on a new MTB?
I just wanna start riding and keeping fit....budget is about R2000
i saw this one from game:

heard raliegh is a good company....

Some good advice so far.Bottom line is the components will start packing in after a year or so and you'll end up spending more on maintaining the thing in the long run.The other problem is they say mountain bike but take it on anything except a gentle trail and you're going to have problems, especially with spokes snapping, wheels buckling, crank gears warping, and generally just an uncomfortable experience.Take it from me I've been there.

Yep! Seat is very important. And wear the correct clothing...it might look stupid, but your arse will thank you later :p

And don't forgot to unlock your shocks...I forgot to do that once while going downhill on a very bumpy trail...my hand and fingers wanted to fall off.

Everyone has good points. Dont go the Makro route. Have a look at bikes on the hub and do yourself a favor and get a padded pant.

There is hope. If you have a decent bike, invest in cycling shorts. If you don't like the tights-look, wear normal shorts over them. The padding for modern cycling isn't located on the bike seat at all, but in the pants.

+1 to the buying second hand idea. You'll be able to get a much better 2nd hand bike for the same price as a new Game/Makro/P&P cheapie. Those cheap bikes aren't worth it - the components are of very low quality and will give you more hassles than joy.
