Stretch the budget a little if you're able to for hydraulic disk brakes.
Also be aware that if you go cheap and hit the dirt tracks, the cheaper models take a beating and break far easier, I have not had too many issues with my silverback 29er, I ride it hard, make sure to service once a year.

Yeah I was going to to suggest the same. For that money I would rather go with an older 26 that has a proper suspension fork and hydraulic brakes.
I have a 2004 Kona Hoss Dee-lux with original fork and brakes - works like a dream. When I traded it for another bike the value was about R3500. I made the wheels tubeless and converted it to a 1x10 setup.
Even rode this years CTCT on it just for the heck of it.

Hi guys
Hoping you can guide and assist.
I am starting out and looking to purchase my first MTB and having a hard time deciding which bike to go with. I haven't cycled in many years and the joints cannot take the running much any longer so looking to make change.
I will probably do some road cycling at first and make my way up to some novice trails once I get used to handling the MTB.
I was happy to go to Makro and buy a bike there but was then shown the errors of my ways so upped the budget a bit and started looking at other options. Anyway, after weeks of research and trying to get my head around the MTB technology and options ( incrementally pushing up the budget), I think I have finally come out of my confused state and have finally narrowed it down to 3 options.

I am scouring the classifieds but like @Daruk said, it can be quite a mixed bag. I am only getting familiar with MTB technology now and am not very confident with buying 2nd hand. I've seen people advertising bikes with pricing that is not much lower than buying it new in the store or with pricing that is even more expensive than new.I stand to be corrected here...

It's been years but I bought and sold my bike on there with very little hassle and scored a good deal.
The was even a guy recently that advertised his MTB for R10 000 not negotiable, claims it retailed for R15000, but when I checked, retail new from the store was R6500. Also you don't know how well people looked after their bikes.

as much as I hate pedals. I got a mongoose at cajees for 5000 second hand. disc brakes and fancy shock and all that. Happy with it as you could be with a bicycle
Pretty much what i came to say.. 10-13k though good vs wear is likely closer two 15k. wrt to what u get.. generally dual sus + disk brakes + 3x 9 gearing + 29' (26' is out of fashion) , aluminium or some carbon, and generally is a 40k bike but 3-4yrs old. Best way to evaluate 2nd hand bike is to look at the cost of the same thing new (even newer models to give u an idea)
I would advise people buying 2nd hand to have a good look at youtube vids on what to look for in 2nd hand bikes wrt wear as replacement can be costly and some things are obvious in retrospect to check e.g. damage to derailer or wheel mount, damage to underside, crankset etc With carbon u also need to be weary on damage.
Usually after the 94.7 and Cpt cycle tour you will see a few newer 2nd bikes as a lot of people fly in do the race and sell .. others buy the bicycle a few months before, do a few rides, the main event, write off bucket list and sell.
Buy decent pants, ur balls will thank you.. also learn to be comfy to ride off seat as most mtb is done this way on rough terrain despite dual sus. if you going mtb, consider getting flats with cleat support. standard rugged plastic pedals are cheap tho but yah.. if starting out don't be scared of starting on flats.. beats falling over every stop haha
yup.. bought my 26' when it was still majority and 29' was new stuff.. don't regret it tbh.

I got 31,000km out of a used 2014 Silverback Sola 1 that I bought in 2016. The price was R9k but I paid R6k as I swapped a new DT Swiss wheelset. It is the best bike I ever had and proof you can get a decent used bike for under R10k.

Yeah it is a gamble but there are deals to be had.
I got a Santa Cruz Blur xc for 11k just before 29er craze hit so price was still reasonable for a 26er.
It cost me about 4k replacing and servicing some of the parts but at 15k for a dual sus full carbon bike it was a steal. But then CUD bites and it's SLR rims, hope brakes, XO shifters etc etc. (sold it 3 years later for 13k it was just above 10kg in weight.)
I guess my point here being that for 10-12k I'd personally look for a solid frame that you can build on. And be patient for the right deal. Buying new on the cheap range can be rough, although you should be able to recoup most of the investment.
