My local Cycle store offered to match price on the Silverback so taking the offer.

Looks like nice bike.
 
Makro is now selling Cannondale Trail 5 29 for R4500 and trail 7 for R39xx.

I don't know anything about bicycles but seems like a good deal.
 
You actually need to get in store and try them out I reckon, I ordered the Silverback 29er Large so hoping it's money well spent.

Currently on 26er Axis Small that my son will get when he grows into it or wife will use.

Was just a once off - excess stock of 2016 models that they got a deal on.
If you can get your hands on one buy one - great deal !
 
Picked up my silverback 29er Large, had to lower the seat lol, thing is massive but nice comfortable ride.

Main riding will be Transkei region over Xmas, beach and hillside cow/people trails.

I drive Nissan NP300 and bought one of these a while back to fit my Chev https://www.sportsmanswarehouse.co.za/product/buzz-rack-beetle-3-bike-carrier/4483

Do I really need to buy the Tow-hitch version now or can I Macgyver the above to fit tailgate of NP300 (no canopy).
??
 
My eldest 7 going on 8, currently on 20 Avalanche , want to buy him 24 with gears/shocks etc.

Bike Carriers, so we now have 4 bikes, 29, 26, 24, 20

This a decent carrier, will only use the thing a couple times a year I reckon with toughest test being dirt "road" to wild coast.

Also which brand, Thule seems to be 9/10, Holdfast 6/10, Buzzrack, 7/10 ?

Thule is pretty pricey but easy to fit on.

Be sure to check the weight limit before you buy. They have a max total limit and a max limit per bike.

Also those don't play nice with non-standard frames. I'm not sure about womans bikes though.

The main issue I have with these bike carriers is that the spacing between the bikes are tight. I have a two bike carrier from Thule and I often have to remove the front wheel or loosen and turn the handle bars of one of the bikes going onto the carrier. Other than that, I like them as they hook onto the tow bar and have a slot to lock the carrier in place ('cause, you know, free shopping is a national past time).

I'd also suggest getting some padding to put between the bikes to prevent the frames knocking against one another. Anything from pool noodles to something like the Imbi.
 
Will def get padding and lock for when we travel, last time through the Transkei we had one bike tied down to roof rack, I counted 7 affirmative shoppers touching the bike to see if it was loose.

Klapperkop increased security and added boom gates which worked well for a while. I saw a post on one of the FB MTB groups that the boom was unmanned on a recent ride.

Since you are around the Klapperkop area, I'd suggest popping into the following stores in the east to get a feel for what is out there.

I do know Cyclelab has a special on until the end of December (Silverback, Scott, Momsen 29ers all under 10K).

many years ago I had a cheap mountain bike. That bike had a hard life gauteng and in the cape with many miles on it. I have had no issues with it ever other than the broken jockey (after a stupid fall).

sold it to a co worker when I moved back. currently have another entry level titan, they perfect if you don't go pro.
