To answer your questions:
What: It allows you to lock your suspension so that the bike effectively becomes rigid (there will always be a bit of movement). Also note it comes in two flavours: "remote" meaning you have a lever on your handlebars to lock/unlock and "non-remote" where the lockout is operated on the suspension itself (on forks its usually at the top, on the crown and for rear shocks it's usually on the air canister).

Why: When you pedal on a bike with suspension a bit of your energy on each pedal stroke compresses the suspension rather than rotating the pedals so when you don't need the suspension (e.g. riding on a road) you can lock it to improve the efficiency of your pedaling.

Is it necessary: Simple answer, no. On my old bike it had a lock out but it was not remote so I never used it. On my current bike I have a remote lock out and I use it when I'm racing and going absolutely flat out and need to conserve as much energy as possible. On training rides I leave it unlocked the whole time anyway.
 
I had remote lock out on my bike when I got it, but RockShox uses this flimsy PopLoc thingy so I just had the damper replaced with a manual lock out one. Never locked out the shock.

And seems I need to apply for my gun license first before I buy the bike. :p
Never knew it was that dangerous. But I'm guessing I will stick to the bike venues and organised trail races for a while anyway unless I find a good crowd to go biking with as a group.

Hoping to pop into a shop or two this weekend to physically see and try out frames sizes and the likes.
 
How many cyclists here actually carry while riding? And is it comfortable?

I tend to only ride when I'm in a group. Not worth the risk going solo.

Go try out bikes and see what sizes suit you. If you want the best value for money, hop onto the classified on The Hub.
 
I only take pepper spray with, sometimes a big hunting knife, it has a holster that you put on your belt, does not bother me.
 
Unfortunately had no time the weekend to look around.

Neighbour's wall collapsed last week and we had to stay home to keep the dogs locked up while the builders scrambled to get the wall completely rebuilt and our palisade fencing replaced after it was dragged down with the collapsing wall. Grocery shopping was done in shifts with one of us always staying home.

My searching is limited to the odd bike article at this time.

Wife is also keen now after seeing me browse around and watch videos past week or so. So might need to save up a while longer to get 2 x. I actually hope she does fully commit. Would be a nice way to enjoy the outdoors as a family.
 
So my 26 mtb is feeling a bit small, looking at getting something like 29er, I know most people recommend 2nd hand but it's tricky to find decent here in Eastern Cape (East London), worried about getting ripped off.

price range is nothing over R6000 at the most, I see there are some R5000 and below as well.

They're legit. I bought a Silverback from them in about 2015. Was a really good deal, but did mean I had to drive out to Malmsberry (granted, I was only in CT...).

Can't say much for their after sales support as I never needed it.

Their prices are very good so was worried, I'm in East London but see they have free shipping if you spend over R3000.
 
Joh, I forgot they still spec bikes like that with 7 speed cassettes :unsure:

Looking at those three the Silverback is the only one with hydraulic disc brakes. Apart from that they all seem the same, entry level Tourney/Altus components.
