Budget mountain bike

Someone criticized Titan that I ended up being disappointed since it's really the cheapest one I have found.

On bikehub even 2nds are very expensive with most going above R10k, maybe I should just stick to running.

I've seen quite a few Titan entry level bikes between R5k - R10k. And that is new. Many more on Gumtree for similar prices. But still wrapping my head around all the specs and models.

Found out a bit more about my siblings'bikes and brother is riding a Titan Ryde 29er and sister her kids Silverbacks. Mix between 27.5 and 29.

Brother actually has a XL frame so might be good for me to ask if I can borrow his for a test drive and see what my feelings are about the size and brand. Sister and her kids will all have medium frames I guess. Bunch of shorties.
 
I bought a second hand Raleigh 29er at a local cashcrusaders about a year ago. That's quite a good starter bike if you can get one on the cheap(I paid R1500) and you're not really sure if the cycling thing is for you.
The only thing that's shît on it is the front suspension, so I won't recommend anyone that's serious buy one new.
The rest of the bike is good enough and compatible to my friends Titan to the point we're I'm now almost considering just upgrading the front fork and not upgrading to a better bike.

Also it's flat were I stay so I mainly ride farm dirt roads.

I used to ride a Merida 900 something 29er. Had a knee injury and then sold the bike. Once I recovered, many months later, I opted in for titan. The titan I bought was half the price of the Merida and felt exactly the same to me. I bought the titan brand new for just over 7k.

I'm nowhere near a pro and I cycle occasionally 2-3 times a week.

Titan is great value for money.

Avoid Raleigh. They are heavy, and the group set (gears, breaks, etc) are not great. The Titan is value for money, and will hold you in good stead for a long time.

What is more important is that you get set up correctly on your bike. Not being set up correctly can lead to injuries. Make sure you go for a fit. I cannot recommend anyone as my fitter is in Jhb. You can head over to the The Hub as well for more advise.

Cycling is very exciting. If you hit the trails, I am sure you are going to get hooked. I am more of a roadie due to my triathlon love, but MTB (mountain biking) is even more thrilling. You should consider taking your kids on some trails too. Hit the bike trails, then go for a breakfast afterwards is always a great day out. If you are unsure, the Hub can point you in the right direction of where to go.

Good point about Raleigh, they are no longer the good ones of old, like those Microsoft Raleigh road bikes. New ones are Game specials.

Titan or Momsen are what I would go after for my next bike.

Tomorrow it will be 4°C when I line up for the start of the Wolseley 60km MTB ️

Those M$ Raleighs are excellent bikes :love: I make do with a 2002 Giant OCR3 that I upgraded to a 1x9 setup using a Sunrace 11t-40t MTB cassette at the back, rides like a dream. Before that it was a 1x8 11t-34t and I did two double Argus rides on it.

Someone asked about Avalanche, they are local too and not too bad. More focused on the lower end but they have a few OK-ish bikes : https://avalanchebicycles.co.za/bikes/

I usually ride with my triathlete club. I have had some long days in the saddle alone during the summer when doing century rides, but the Cradle is usually always busy in the summer. Best is to just ride with a group, and stick to the more populated areas.

It's a shame that this happens. We have such a beautiful country, but cannot enjoy it.

It does not even make sense. These bikes don't sell well at all. They are very expensive, and only appeal to triathletes. This bike is worth at least R60k (up to around 90k if it had any gadgets on it), but the resale value is dismally low. They are terrible commuter bikes and there is no real spare market.

Such a travesty.
 
In the 7 years that I started cycling there has been a couple attempts to bike jack me, thankfully all of them were unsuccessful and when ever possible I avoid getting into such situations. In the morning I also share the road with minibus taxis, however most of them know me and I have never had any physical contact with one.

On the road, or off road? Scary stuff.

Thankfully, I have not had a bike jacking incident yet. Have had many vehicles come far too close for comfort (even while I am in a cycling lane).
 
All of those attempts were on road next to Cloetesville. When it comes to off road I keep to the safer areas around town, which is a pity because there are some incredible trails next to Helshoogte but far too many attacks take place there, even on road.
 
Also use to ride at Klaperkop in Pretoria but there was basically a mugging everyday. They changed the hours so can't really ride early morning or late evening. I am also looking for a new mountain bike around bike around 10k, 1,8 m tall. Any suggestions ?

It's for the suspension. I don't think you need it. It more of a gimmick.
 
My buddy has totalled 3 bikes thanks to taxis.
I only got hit once by a woman back in my school days. Thankfully we're both still alive.

When it comes to bike jackings I believe even groonkloof isn't safe these days.
