Budget second-hand Car Needed

Okay but I would go with Ford Fiesta 1.6 the old one it's within his budget he will have some change left. To fix what need to be fixed but Madza 2 nice car to he can't go wrong with it.

Just checked auto trader I see the price for previous generation Mazda 2 has really dropped.

I was going to suggest the same. The Duratec engines are pretty bullet proof, and the chassis in these is a good laugh to chuck around corners for what it lacks being that it only kicks out 75kw... And the standard sound system is not bad either, and the seats that were in my sister's 1.4 were very comfortable.

I found a Ghia (top spec) that seems to be in good shape and well looked after... even has the climate control:

A tazz,my first car too and I hated it.No power no power steering....thank goodness I managed to buy other cars.

I might get hating for saying this, but a tazz is a really nice car to drive. its basic mechanics makes it fun no computers and traction control yes I know that there is not much power that it produces that would warrant traction control. My current cars feel like laptops with their electronic power steering etc.

A Tazz can never be a nice car to drive no matter how positive you are in life, It's too low on the ground, very uncomfortable, no aircon and the manual labour steering?

It is a nice car to have alright, it will never let you down when you need it most due to all the things you mentioned.

I agree, and for the same price as a decently maintained Tazz, why not get something with airbags, abs, and aircon?

I currently own a '97 Toyota Tazz, which was given to me as my first car, and currently looking to trade up to a hatchback that has a bit more power (without sacrificing too much cost on high maintanence car brands).

My budget is approximately R70 000 and was hoping to find a vehicle that has over 80kw of power.
Perhaps I'm shooting for the moon in looking for something that meets these criteria but any input on suggested vehicles from more experienced car guys in the community would be greatly appreciated!

From a quick google. There's a 2008 opel astra 1.8 on cars.co.za for R68k.

We don't need another "Opel is giving me problems thread", let's first deal with all of those first, in the meanwhile anybody needing car advice should be pointed to the Japanese.

I concur Jap is the way to go for OP.

Mazda 2; Honda Jazz; Toyota Yaris; Suzi Swift & maybe lift the silly 80kw min restriction. Speed is relative. Eg. Doing 100km/h in a Smart Fortwo "feels" a fair deal faster than 100km/h in a Polo.

There may be one car with only 70kw but it actually feels faster than another car with an 85kw output.

Lol if no power steering, lack of stability under hard braking and severe understeer in fast corners is your idea of fun then I have to wonder how limited the types of cars you have driven are? What are you driving that is so laptopish,a KIA?:erm:

Back in the day when I upgraded from the Tazz I got a good deal on a sightly used 2004 BMW e46 318i.Truth be told I was an Audi fan at the time but because of price I took the car.I liked the handling dynamics so much that even to this day I have two BMW's.If you want a proper drivers car that is fun to drive get a BMW,they are not as expensive to maintain as some claim and good used second hand ones come by at a relatively decent price.People think a tazz is so efficient with it's small engine. It's not. It's crap.My average fuel consumption on the 318i with vastly superior power was 20% lower than on the tazz driving at similar speeds.

Somebody else mentioned Mazda's fun to drive handling dynamics on the mazda 2 ,I haven't driven one of those but after driving a friends mazda 3 I can believe it because the mazda 3 had a very well balanced "fun" chassis for a front wheel drive car even achieving over steer on corners was easily possible.

nothing wrong with a tazz

Nothing wrong with it at all......besides that it's a POS.I had one for over 3 years, sure it got me lots of places and I had fun in it,however the fun was where I was going to and who I was going with the car was just crap.

Look it got me from A to B,that makes it an "OK" as a transport but it's definitely not fun or something you would turn back to look at after you walk away from it.

I even had aircon on mine. When going to durban I had to switch it off up the hills to maintain 120km/h,it just drained too much power!:D
