I currently own a '97 Toyota Tazz, which was given to me as my first car, and currently looking to trade up to a hatchback that has a bit more power (without sacrificing too much cost on high maintanence car brands).

My budget is approximately R70 000 and was hoping to find a vehicle that has over 80kw of power.
Perhaps I'm shooting for the moon in looking for something that meets these criteria but any input on suggested vehicles from more experienced car guys in the community would be greatly appreciated!

Preferably anything after 2006... Not as into modding due to time constraints

I would suggest go look at Hyundai Getz, Daihatsu Sirion (it's in your price range and you will have a bit of change left). Lastly I know many will disagree with me have a look at Honda Brio 2013 model also in your price range. The one with beige seats it's cheap Honda getting rid of old stock. Nice little basic car it have all the basics you need in a car.

Guys it's me Semisane the is something wrong with my old account.

Oh also look at old Ford Fiesta definitely in your price range the going for about R60 000 the remaining amount you can fix what is needed to be fixed, before you start to drive.

You can get a MK4 Golf or a later (still old) 16i Citi Golf. The problem with cars like these and others they were usually run hard and to the redline. So just be careful and do your homework on the cars

You can't get a Brio for R70k, unless maybe something from an auction.

Okay I thought the old one with beige seats maybe could be cheap. Anywhere have a look at Ford Fiesta the old shape.

Stick with Toyota reliability and get yourself a 2006 1.6 Corolla or if you look hard enough you can find yourself the 180gsx, 100kw will be amazing coming from that slow Tazz.

I agree on the Fiesta, a 1.6 to be specific, good and powerful car for its class.

Maybe a beaten up runx RSI, 141kw on the tap! Not sure what condition it will be in if you find one for 70k :P

You might be able to fund runx RX or corolla 180I GSX for 70k, through corolla won't be hatchback but they share the same internals. Both has 100kw.

80kw being a bare minimum for what I'm looking for, any more power and I'll still be happy

For your budget and unusual requirements in my view your best bet is the previous-gen 1.5L Mazda 2. The car is a great handling fun car; super reliable & makes 75kw. Less than your 80kw number yes but the car is very light (~1035 kg); more so than all of its rivals.

Can he fine Madza 2 within his budget the previous generation Mazda 2

Okay but I would go with Ford Fiesta 1.6 the old one it's within his budget he will have some change left. To fix what need to be fixed but Madza 2 nice car to he can't go wrong with it.

Just checked auto trader I see the price for previous generation Mazda 2 has really dropped.

you can look for a twincam if that's your thing

you can also consider a BEAMS conversion to your existing car, they are relatively cheap and popular to do, and that sound is extremely addictive
