Bufferbloat - Best ISP to minimise?

Appreciate the help, for sure.
Didn't intend to sound harsh.

If one packet delays, it can cause a queue. Try borrowing a friends router and see if the issues persist. If you are having connection problems, it is one of the easiest things to check if it is your router. I had ADSL issues with dropped connection, yes my line was at fault, but my router was also at fault. Routers age and things go wrong. Load shedding does not help.

In those 5 minutes there was definitely packet loss between the ipc and the core network.

There was serious packet loss in the one trace I saw BTW.

Keep the test running and post the final results here after one hour. Let's look at some actual data over a proper period we can use for diagnostic purposes of this issue. ;)

This guy?

:)

Not sure how I missed it. Afrihost is my favourite so far though. Damn.

Afrihost used to be awesome. Unfortunately, they've been on a downhill slide since MTN became the major shareholder.

Agreed. Not a lot of good players left that aren't tainted.

Will run that test again soon, need to use my network for some work first though. Will post it ASAP.

Thanks again to those who have contributed.

Not an isp or adsl issue.

The only thing I could suggest is playing with tcp/ip window size/flow control & mtu settings.

Hey folks,

Want to revive this thread a bit 'cause I've hit the same issue.
Think it's bufferbloat - and if so is certainly device and not ISP related.

I'd been running a Netgear DG834GT (54/108mbps b/g ADSL router) for years - until it up and died on me last week. RIP fantastic device :). The wireless lan was always solid - latency of 1ms to 3ms (max) during general activities i.e.: general browsing, email downloading, etc. There was however impact when Google drive was running uploads from my phones. This generally bumped latency up to around 125ms. Still not bad at all. Could still push through good download rates whilst that was happening. Generally didn't even notice this.

So that died and I procured a Billion 8800NXL (N300 b/g/n VDSL router) and this is where the trouble began.
Wireless lan latency is all over the place all of the time. Fluctuates between 1ms and mid 100's.
The folks at Billion still haven't answered why.
Today the wheels fell off with latency at Hop 2 (the exchange) showing > 3000ms. Everything ground to a halt.
Appears as though I've hit the (nasty) bufferbloat issue.
I've determined the source - Google drive uploads from my phone, which didn't cripple the Netgear is seriously crippling the Billion. Disconnect that connection and latency drops back from 3000ms to the norms mentioned above. Uploads of any sort are effectively crippling the connection.

So my view is that this is certainly device related. The Netgear clearly didn't have a huge buffer, hence the low max latency. This Billion clearly has a large buffer - and 3 seconds has been mentioned on numerous sites- which causes the issue.

Soooo...
Any ideas folks? I went for the Billion because it's a VDSL device. It is frustrating the living heck out of me with the latency inconsistencies. Thought it would be a great device. It's turned out to be an exercise in hair-pulling.
Any suggestions re a solid ADSL (or VDSL) router?

Rgds,
SD.
