Bugatti Chiron

Bugatti's new Dubai showroom is its largest in the world

A quarter of Chiron orders so far have come from the UAE, so it's not wonder the brand has built its biggest showroom there

Bugatti has opened its largest showroom in the world; a 2583-square-foot building in the centre of Dubai.

The dealership is the 15th in Bugatti’s global dealer network. But despite being the firm's biggest showroom, it is one seventy-seventh of the size of the world’s largest car dealership: that title belongs to Longo Toyota in California, which covers more than 2.1 million square-feet. If Toyota had one dealership in every country in which it sells, it would still have over eleven times the number of dealers as Bugatti.

Unlike Longo Toyota’s 1939-strong current stock of cars, though, there’s only one model to be sold in the Bugatti lineup; the Chiron, of which only 500 will ever be made. Already, 30 orders have been received for the Chiron through Bugatti’s UAE partner, Al Habtoor Motors. That represents 26% of the car’s overall order base so far.

The new showroom sits in central Dubai, and is identifiable by the large gateway entrance to the building, which is a four-metre tall, scaled-up version of Bugatti’s signature horseshoe grille.

Not only is the Chiron on display at the showroom, but customers can configure their Chiron on-site, surrounded by Bugatti-branded furniture.

Hennessey vows to dethrone Chiron with Venom F5

Hennessey Performance has confirmed that it will later this year reveal its all-new hypercar, making no bones about the fact that the new model will “take direct aim at the new Bugatti Chiron” for the title of the world’s fastest production series super sports car.

So, what will this apparent Chiron-killer be called? Well, Hennessey has dubbed it the Venom F5, naming it after the fastest and most powerful wind on earth: the F5 tornado.

New from the ground up, the US company says the F5 will boast its “own unique chassis and design, which will help elevate its performance to speeds approaching 300 mph [483 km/h]”.

Bugatti, of course, has yet to reveal the Chiron’s official unlimited top speed, with all models sold limited to 420 km/h. However, the VW Group automaker is confident that the W16-powered Chiron would surpass the 431 km/h achieved by the Veyron Supersport were the limiter to be disabled.

Hennessey, meanwhile, has yet to confirm the F5’s powertrain, although it seems likely a heavily revised version of the 7,0-litre twin-turbo V8 from the Venom GT will be used.

“We are very excited about our F5 and that it brings forth an all-new design and chassis to achieve even higher performance through improved aerodynamics and technology,” said founder and CEO, John Hennessey.

“The best way I can describe the Venom F5 is that it is sophisticated aggression on wheels. We look forward to sharing F5 with the world later this year.”

Interestingly, Hennessey says it has established a new company that will design, develop, build and sell the Venom F5, calling it Hennessey Special Vehicles. This new division will operate on the same campus (just west of Houston, Texas) as the tuning business, which includes proving grounds and the all-important dragstrip.

“This is a new chapter in an all-new book. F5 will be exceptionally American and built in Texas. We look forward to sharing more details about our special hypercar very soon,” said Hennessey.

HERE’S WHAT’S STOPPING CHIRON FROM HITTING 480 KM/H

Bugatti has yet to reveal the Chiron’s official unlimited top speed, with all models sold topping out at 420 km/h in the most aggressive mode. But the company’s test driver says there is likely just one thing that would stop the Chiron from crossing the magical 300 mph (or, for us, 483 km/h): tyres.

Test driver Andy Wallace told the folks over at Popular Mechanics that a delimited Chiron on the current production tyres would probably do a little more than 280 mph (450 km/h). This, of course, would see the W16-powered Chiron surpassing the 431 km/h record achieved by the Veyron Supersport way back in 2010.

“Wallace says at the moment, there is no tyre that can withstand the g-loading at 300 mph, but he predicts Michelin engineers will sign off on a top speed with the current production tyre slightly north of 280 mph,” wrote Popular Mechanics.

The Chiron employs an 8,0-litre engine with as many as four turbochargers. Peak power output stands at 1 119 kW, while maximum torque is a claimed 1 600 N.m.

Interestingly, Hennessey earlier this week confirmed that it will soon reveal its all-new hypercar, making no bones about the fact that the new model will “take direct aim at the new Bugatti Chiron” for the title of the world’s fastest production series super sports car.

The US company says the Venom F5 will boast its “own unique chassis and design, which will help elevate its performance to speeds approaching 300 mph”.

The race, then, is well and truly on…

Next Bugatti Chiron set to be electrified

Only electrification can improve on the Chiron's current performance, CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer says

The next-generation Bugatti Chiron – still at least seven years from production – will have to be electrified to enhance its performance beyond the current car’s record-breaking capabilities, CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer said.

The Chiron can reach 62mph in less than 2.5sec, despite weighing 1995kg, and has a top speed of 261mph. At its heart is a quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 configured petrol engine that develops 1479bhp at 6750rpm, giving the Chiron a power-to-weight ratio of 741bhp per tonne. Torque peaks at 1179lb ft from 2000rpm.

“Electrification will happen,” said Dürheimer. “The next car is a long way from being developed, but the way battery and electric motor technology is moving on – as well as regulations – it seems certain that the next car will be electrified in some way. It will still be too soon for a full electric car, I think – but electrification will happen.”

As such, Dürheimer has also declared that there “will probably never be a car with the pure mechanical capabilities of the Chiron” – and, as a result, he is considering buying one. “The fact is that it may never be beaten in pure mechanical terms makes it incredibly desirable,” he said.

In 2016, Dürheimer told Autocar that hybridisation was initially considered as a way of extracting the required power from the W16 to ensure the Chiron eclipsed the Veyron. In the end, though, the power increase was simply achieved by upgrading many of the engine’s components.

Already, the McLaren P1, LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder have employed hybrid technology to deliver hypercar performance. For instance, the P1 is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine and electric motors, together generating 903bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 2.8sec, 0-124mph in 6.8sec and 0-186mph in 16.5sec.

Dürheimer also hinted that ongoing plans to introduce a second Bugatti model to the firm’s line-up could delay production of the next generation Chiron, as the firm would possibly switch to a strategy of alternating between new car launches. If that happens, a new Bugatti model could be launched around 2024 and the next Chiron not until 2032.

“We are looking at what customers want if we do something different, and we have some ideas,” said Dürheimer. “But we are not under pressure to decide – production of the Chiron is expected to last for around eight years. We are at the predevelopment phase, preparing technically and asking clients what they expect.”

Dürheimer declined to reference any bodystyles for such a vehicle. The Bugatti Galibier five-door fastback concept was shown in 2009 but did not get the go-ahead for production. However, the concept of a more practical but still standard-setting high-performance vehicle remains a potential target for Bugatti. To date, 280 of the planned 500 Chirons have been sold.

EXCLUSIVE: Bugatti Chiron Coming To South Africa This Year

While we are sitting at our computer desks and behind the wheels of our cars there is a Bugatti Chiron about to go into production that will be visiting our very own South Africa.

The car has been spec’d absolutely superbly (having seen the spec) but we do not want to giveaway the surprise of that just yet.

We can expect it to arrive in SA towards the end of the year and will be in Johannesburg briefly but mainly Durban for a couple of months on a Carnet de Passages.

Who else is looking forward to having this mega car on South African soil? I know I cannot wait!

While we on the topic of Bugatti, does anyone have confirmation (as in photo evidence) of a Veyron that is apparently living in Johannesburg?

Bugatti Chiron sets 0-400kph-0 world record

Chiron accelerated to, then braked from, 249mph in a whisker under 42 seconds

The Bugatti Chiron has broken the world record for the fastest 0-400kph-0 (0-249mph-0) run, achieving the feat in 41.96sec.

Breaking the previous production car record, the Chiron covered 3112 metres with former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya behind the wheel.

Bugatti plans to demonstrate the car’s top speed next year, when the new 1479bhp hypercar is expected to be faster than the 268mph recorded in the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport seven years ago. It eclipses the performance of its predecessor, the Veyron, although Bugatti is tight-lipped on how much quicker the Chiron is overall.

The record run was overseen by automotive technology company SGS-TÜV Saar. Montoya chose not to wear protective clothing, including a helmet, during the record run.

Montoya said: “Of course, the Chiron is a super sports car that requires your full attention when you are behind the wheel. At the same time, it gave me such a feeling of security and reliability that I was entirely relaxed and really enjoyed myself during my two days with the car."

Forty-two seconds is around the same as a Fiat 126 took to reach 62mph from standstill. The 126 sold 4.6 million units globally, though, while the Bugatti has so far sold 300 of the 500 Chirons in its production run.

Bugatti is showcasing the record-breaking car at the Frankfurt motor show this week; a special-edition car with number 42 on its grille will be shown.
