Bugatti Chiron 'prototype' registers speed record ... clocking 490,48 km/h!

Bugatti claims it has become the first manufacturer to break the 300 mph barrier, with a "near-production" prototype of the Chiron clocking 490,484 km/h (or 304,773 mph).

The automaker said the top speed run took place on a test track in Germany, with test driver Andy Wallace behind the wheel.

"What a record! We're overjoyed to be the first manufacturer ever to have achieved a speed of more than 300 miles per hour,” said Stephan Winkelmann, president of Bugatti.

“It’s a milestone for eternity. I would like to thank the whole team and driver Andy Wallace for this outstanding performance,” Winkelmann said.

The firm hasn't released very much detail yet, but from what we understand the run took place at Ehra-Lessien in Germany at the start of August 2019. Michelin supplied the all-important tyres.

Bugatti Chiron goes 304mph to set hypercar record

Andy Wallace sets speed record in “near production spec” Chiron at German test track

Bugatti’s decision to introduce the Chiron with a 261mph speed limiter left the question of what it was truly capable of. Now the company has revealed the spectacular answer, with a slightly modified car smashing both the production car speed record and the 300mph barrier.

British sportscar veteran, Le Mans winner and official Bugatti tester, Andy Wallace drove to an astounding 304.773mph at the VW Group’s secretive Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany.

The Chiron’s “near production” spec included an additional safety cell, aerodynamic changes and a taller seventh gear, as well as a 1578bhp version of Bugatti’s quad-turbocharged 8-litre W16 engine taken from up from the 1479bhp of the ‘standard’ car. Autocar believes that the mechanical changes will be incorporated into a celebratory limited-edition model.

The record also relied on specially constructed Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres designed to handle the enormous forces of such speeds – at the record velocity each was turning 4100 times a minute. Each tyre was X-rayed before it was selected for use to ensure that none of the radial bands was touching each other; while this doesn’t matter at even the Chiron’s normal governed speed it could have created heat.

Wallace also admitted that the enormous gyroscopic effect of wheels rotating so quickly became a challenge at ultra-high speeds. “At 200mph you can barely feel it, but at 300mph it’s absolutely enormous,” he told Autocar after the run, “it’s felt mostly on the front wheels and therefore the steering, like a spinning top when it starts to move it wants to continue to move.”

Bugatti Smash 300 MPH Barrier With Modified Chiron Hitting 304.77 MPH (490 KM/H)

Just yesterday we shared footage of the Chiron Sport hitting its limited top speed of 420 km/h and now we have something even more remarkable.

This slightly modified Bugatti Chiron became the first hypercar to pass the 300 mph barrier on the 2nd of August with a top speed of 304.77 mph (490 km/h).

Over the past six months, a team of engineers from Bugatti, Michelin and Dallara set their focus on creating a machine to break the mythical 300 mph barrier.

As mentioned, this is no ordinary Chiron and you can tell that immediately by the way it looks. It is 25 cm longer and has a much more purposeful appearance. The significantly lowered ride height not only reduces drag but also gives it a lot more menacing presence.

At the back you will notice the long tail with a smaller cross-section to reduce drag and if you think you have seen those exhausts before you would be right as they were seen on the newly revealed Centodieci.

Further drag reducing measures were the removal of the rear wing and airbrake and replaced with a static unit sunk into the tail.

Bugatti 'withdraws' from speed wars after Chiron clocks 490,48 km/h

Bugatti says it has “withdrawn” from the so-called speed wars after it became the first manufacturer to break the 300 mph barrier, with a "near-production" prototype of the Chiron recently clocking 490,484 km/h.

In a statement detailing the speed record, the French firm said it will “withdraw from the competition to produce the fastest serial production cars”.

“We have shown several times that we build the fastest cars in the world. In future we will focus on other areas,” explained Stephan Winkelmann, president of Bugatti.

“Bugatti has once again shown what it’s capable of. With this new record of the Chiron we enter again uncharted territory. Never before has a series manufacturer reached this high speed,” he said.

“Our goal was to be the first manufacturer ever to reach the magic 300-mile-per-hour mark. We have now achieved this – making ourselves, the entire team and myself, incredibly proud.”

Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace was the man behind the wheel when the record was set on 2 August 2019 on the test track at Ehra-Lessien in Lower Saxony.

The Michelin Tyres Used For Bugatti’s 300 MPH Run Were Tested To 317 MPH (510 KM/H)

If you don’t know the news by now, you are hiding under a rock or you don’t have an internet connection of sorts.

Yes, Bugatti broke the 300 mph barrier in a slightly-modified Chiron early last month which is astonishing but by the sounds of things, the top speed battle is just heating up.

Michelin created the very special tyres capable of dealing with such huge forces, rotating up to 4100 times a minute. The specially constructed Michelin Pilot Cup 2’s were all x-rayed before being selected for use on the car and they had been reinforced with stronger metallic threads in the carcass.

Bugatti Chiron Prototype Could Have Hit 515 KM/H On Nevada Highway

Bugatti has announced that they will no longer be chasing speed records but a further press release from the manufacturer says the Longtail Chiron has what it takes to reach higher speeds.

Unlocking the extra speed all depends on location said the manufacturer. Bugatti decided to go with Ehra-Lessien because they believe it’s the safest location in the world to conduct such top speed runs thanks to the 21 km (13 mile) track with its three lanes, crash barriers, and rescue services at north and south ends. Before each test, the carriageway is cleaned by using special mats.

This track sits at just 50 meters (164 ft) above sea level and by comparison, the Nevada highway where Koenigsegg set several records in their Agera RS sits at 1,036 m (3,400 ft) above sea level. Bugatti has pointed out that the higher the track is located, the less the aerodynamic drag will be since the air pressure and air density decrease the higher you go.

The Molsheim manufacturer took it upon themselves to do some maths and they say that the Longtail creation would have been able to 320 mph (515 km/h) on the Nevada State Road according to the head of development Stefan Ellrott.

New Bugatti Chiron Sport 300+ Celebrates Speed Milestone

Just over a week ago, we watched the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport ‘Longtail’ break the 300 mph (482.8 kph) barrier which is a phenomenal achievement and now, to celebrate, Bugatti has revealed a limited-edition Chiron Super Sport 300+.

Only 30 will be built for customers around the world and while the car used for the blistering run (driven by Andy Wallace) was somewhat modified with an extended ‘longtail’ body, roll cage and lots of computer and timing equipment, the road-going version will forego this hardware to make the car more user-friendly. The production car will also have a passenger seat and ride height will be standard, unlike the prototype.

Featuring extensive use of carbon fibre and bright orange stripes, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ packs a mighty punch of 1 177 kW from its 8.0-litre W16 engine. The production version will also be fitted with a speed limiter that will cap the top speed at 440 kph… Why even bother, right?

Bugatti Chiron Super Sports 300+ Officially Announced

Bugatti smashed through the 300 mph barrier earlier last month in a Chiron ‘longtail’ prototype vehicle which sparked interest in a production version to follow.

We did not have to wait too long because what you are seeing here are the official images of the new Chiron Super Sports 300+ and as you can see it sports the menacing body with the exposed carbon fibre and orange stripes akin to the Veyron SS WRE.

Only 30 units will be made available and it is very close to the record prototype car. It shares the same sleeker, more aero-efficient streamliner bodywork. The same 8.0-litre, quad-turbo W16 unit delivering 1,578 hp (1,177 kW) and the same longer ratio gearbox to achieve that mind-scrambling velocity of 300 mph.

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300

Nobody is faster. Just a few weeks after the sensational record-breaking run undertaken by Bugatti - when for the first time a hyper sports car drove faster than 300 miles per hour - the French brand has showcased a very special edition based on this new Chiron derivative: the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+.

Bugatti presented the new model to a selected group of customers as the highlight of the celebrations to mark the 110th anniversary of the tradition-steeped company in Molsheim. The Chiron Super Sport 300+ played a very special role among numerous historic Bugatti models and the current Bugatti hyper sports cars of modern times, such as the Divo, La Voiture Noire and the Centodieci.

Chiron Super Sport 300+ - the fastest Bugatti

The special edition Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, limited to 30 units, is visually based on the record-breaking car. A few weeks ago, it became the first series-production car to break the magical 300-miles-per-hour barrier. Achieving a speed of exactly 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h), it is now the fastest production hyper sports car ever. But not only that: With an output of 1,176 kW/1,600 hp, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ exceeds the Chiron by 100 hp.

"After the incredible speed record of more than 300 miles per hour, which we were the first series manufacturer to achieve, we're now offering our customers the Super Sport 300+ - a very special edition model and the fastest Bugatti ever", says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. "But the Chiron Super Sport 300+ is more than just the fastest series-production sports car in the world. It is a testimony to Bugatti's technical refinement, masterly workmanship and enormous attention to detail."

The Super Sport 300+ was showcased on as the grand finale of the Grand Tour, a rally that takes in the most important stages in the life of Ettore Bugatti - from Milan via Monaco and Paris to Molsheim in Alsace. The first vehicles of the limited edition model Super Sport 300+, restricted to 30 units, will be delivered to customers at a net unit price of 3.5 million euros in mid-2021.
