I was never a serial punter but this is awful news.

The powers that be have revoked their permit to hire foreign dancers on extremely teneous grounds.

I hate it when the puritans ruin things for everyone.
 
How do you know this is not true:

The strippers were “not paid at all”, were expected to pay the club R2 000 a week, and their working and living conditions made them susceptible to exploitation.

Desai said the women were in a “vulnerable situation” and the fact that the person responsible for them demanded large amounts of money every week possibly placed owner Shane Harrison in contravention of the international Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons.

The dancers are fully aware of the contract when they sign it, no deception is involved. That payment model is pretty standard for the industry and dancers can earn several thousand Rand a night.

Most of these girls come from backgrounds of prostitution and abuse in their native countries and the conditions at Mavericks are a lot better than what they face at home.
 
They want to close down a strip club? So what - let them do it.

Sorry I've never been a fan. Went to one in London and I dont think I've ever felt so uncomfortable in all my life. As Nick3333 points out, its not like the girls are treated fairly anyway.

That is such rubbish logic. I wouldn't say :"Well I don't like religion so we should shut all churches down."
 
so ...basically the strippers pay a "rent" of 2000 a week

damn those strippers make way more than that ....they can definately have a nice place of they own

Actually that would be nice too.

But the reality is, very few of these strip clubs actually protect the rights of women. Most of these women are not well treated.

Has it ever struck you as weird, going to a male dominated environment where women are friendly only because they are paid to be friendly, and you and all of your mates getting aroused at the same time looking at the same girl?

EDIT: Also, despite what your strawman would imply, its not about whether I like stripclubs or not, its about whether I like the abuse of women that often goes with prostitution and strip clubs. Come on, I dont think there has ever been a strip club operated by a stand up, honest dude who pays his staff fairly and does not treat them like possessions.
 
You can't just assume maltreatment.

Also you clearly are making uninformed judgements, stripclubs don't pay their dancers, they either take a commission or they take rent (As in the 2k a week fee.).
 
I dont need to assume - look at the quote from Nick3333. Strip club owners do not look after the best interests of their girls. They are only one small step up from sexual slavery, most of the time.

But hey, dont let me stop there. You just go there and ogle the girls, knowing full well that they are thinking if there were any way for them to get out of there, and get a job that didnt involve taking their clothes off, they would probably take it. They really, really, do no want to be there.

Do you have any evidence to show that they don't want to be there?

Dude, to hear from the other side of the argument I suggest you go to http://www.stripperweb.com a community of exotic dancers. I think you are woefully uneducated. These women aren't poor victims being exploited - their punters are. It is easy to assume that being women they are not in control of their lives but you'd be wrong.
 
On topic: If Mavericks is exploiting their "staff", they should be shut down.

Somewhat off topic: I've never understood the point of strip clubs. You go there, pay lots of money, and still go home with blue balls to rub out out to porn. So why not just skip the first part and just rub one out to porn?

That is unless you're paying the girls for "extra" service, which just doesn't work for me thank you.

afaik the Mavericks girls are petitioning to stay. They've had their valid work permits terminated. One of the girls bought a house in Durbanville, her daughter's in a private school and she's engaged to be married. Mavericks do not treat their staff unfairly. The costs of employment is standard and they (the women) make truckloads.

I believe they've got a court date in this month again sometime.

LOL... So many posts from people who have, as far as I can see, never been to a strip club.
Bob with his lawn service is spot on... Not too many nightspots you walk out of having dropped R10k or more without feeling ripped off that I can think of... except strip clubs. Some of those girls will wrap you around their finger and you'll be loving every minute of it AND paying for it. You exploiting them... Bollocks!
I'm guessing some of the nay sayers are projecting some of their own attitudes on the girls, but those are your issues and yours alone and, as the tee shirt says, yammer om van jou kak te hoor.
