An excellent Life Hacker tutorial that teaches one the ins and outs of Arch Linux.

If you have grown tired of Ubuntu and are looking for something new, I highly recommend giving it a look.

It is also an excellent way for newcomers to Linux to learn what it's all about.

Looks interesting so I'm going to give it a try at University tomorrow.

Thanks for providing the link!

I recomed Arch to all. Best 2mths of of 4yr LINUX life. Sadly its time consuming and my time constraints prevent me from playing around - went back to Ubuntu as I had work to do :(

Anyway, I learn't more from Arch about LINUX in those two months than what I did with Ubuntu for the last 4yrs.

Definitely going to give this bash after my exams! Looking to move on from Ubuntu and I really like the idea of a rolling release distro!

Been messing around with it for the last 2 days, I love it!

Not for the faint of heart though, you NEED to know your way around Linux to get anything decent out of it CSS.

I've used IPCOP as a router before, and while it is pretty damn good, it is not nearly as configurable as I would like. It really depends on what you're looking for. I would recommend giving an Arch linux router a try simply because of everything you will learn in the process.

Also, remember that before trying to figure something out on Arch, check the wiki; there's probably a page for it.

Seriously, the Arch Wiki is amazing.

Sorry but that article sucks if you compare it to the beginners guide on the arch wiki.

Not really, if you can read and follow a guide arch is easy, after your 2nd or 3rd install you should be able to do it blindfolded. Arch is really not that hard if you follow their excellent documentation at wiki.archlinux.org

debian, arch and gentoo have some of the best manuals for installing a system. if you follow them word for word, you should face few to no problems.

Have done a few Gentoo installs. Sort of temped to try Arch. Oh well, maybe when I've got a bit of time.

I'm also planning on trying out Arch soon, mainly cos of what I've read in these forums. Thanks for the info guys

Arch is a great distro.

I don't see any similarities to Gentoo in the whole. I still have a Gentoo install which I am planning to blast at some time. But updating a system on Gentoo and Arch is chalk and cheese. Even when I use yaourt on Arch.I would say Arch fits in somewhere between Debian and Gentoo (given compiling still happens with yaourt).

If any of you guys got an old PC or laptop lying around
Download http://archbang.org

You will think that you just got an upgrade after installing this distro.

A nice distro to get a minimal install up and running quickly and then adding your own stuff & customising. I love Openbox on older hardware and it runs like snot on my old celeron laptop. It's pure Arch without any funnies or custom repos. I even use it on my desktop and then just add KDE or Gnome to it.
