Build a KoalaSafe with a MikroTik

There seems to be a lot of these devices out there lately that does parental control.

Made me think all these devices just seem to be acting as DNS servers and then applying firewall rules and logging on the traffic since this info in theory should be available to the mikrotik as well, is it possible to build your own?

Very possible to build your own, and preferable.
All of these things are basically generic routers (AirTies and others) that are rebadged with the firmware skinned and a bit of feature here and there.
Throwing a piece of off-the-shelf hardware at a problem like this is like pushing a square peg into a round hole. If you DIY you have proper controls.

Is that what youre looking for?

Intruder detection isnt something that Mikrotik does IIRC (Ubiquiti Unifi lineup has that I think?), but you could probably alter logging rules. You never know with Mikrotik you can do just about anything

Regarding basic bandwidth management, Mikrotik has simple queues which are quite easy to implement.

If you need to investigate what devices are using all the bandwidth use Mikrotik Torch.

Also can use pihole as dns server with raspberry pi. Then add malware, spam, scams etc etc to list.

Also DNS security options available then. Also logs dns queries.

Performance is alright. Sometimes see funnies, nothing that simple edit of resolv.conf or quick config check cant fix.

Also can set opendns, quad9, cloudflare. Etc etc.
