Looking to put together a PC for under R11K
In your opinion what do you think I should be putting in it?

Monitor or no monitor?

Asus P5Q
E8400
4GB DDR2-800
500GB HDD (don't get a Seagate 500GB :o)
HD4870
DVD

Postman that sounds like a solid PC.
Do you know any sites that would sell that, or if you are living in Joburg a retailer that you would recommend?

I'm sure if you speak to Itai from Digital Addiction, he will give you a nice price. Otherwise Prophecy are up there and do free shipping on orders over R1000.

Itai is on the forums, check the Dealers section.

Their 500GBs (and some of the 1.5TBs) are notoriously dodgy. Mine just died this week (caching problem), as have many other's on this forum.

Mine is working perfect. I'll post my model... just quickly gonna look for it.
But Seagate has a warranty, they'll refund/replace it

I'll vouch for prophecy, just built a pc with them, prices are good, service is awesome!

That system does sound awesome, 4GB ram and Vista 64 bit, will be flying, especially with a HD4870!

Same as mine which was also working perfectly for 4 months. If you ever notice Windows taking long to boot and a small decrease of speed in Windows, I would suggest backing that drive up.

Warranty does not cover data recovery... :D

Thanks for the tip... I'll set up a Raid system in the new year. Windows is running from a 120Gb HDD, and I'm running Linux from my 200Gb, the 500Gb is just for storage between the two OS's. I'll back up the important stuff to the Linux drive.

b.t.w. How do I make more room in my Case for HDDs? My case has 3 slots (Can only mount 2 HDDs), and the 3rd is sitting loose in one of the 5" bays. I can't find any replacement HDD bays online...

There should be extension kits available. Try Lian-li brand.

Shouldn't he get a E8500 for a little more, then he's guaranteed to have E0 stepping. That'll help if he would want to OC later.

I'm not sure about the 500GB Seagates but I have a 750GB and it works wonderful with no cooling at all inside a rather hot microATX case.
Also, intel is for the suits, be different and go AMD instead.

11K - me thinking 4850, q6600, 4 GB ram, p45 mobo, 750 GB hdd, good case you like for about R1000, 540w psu. I'm sure you will have change - if you do, get more ram, bigger hdd, maybe a 4870, etc...

...too lazy to work out prices - hey, it's friday ok!
