Building a PC

Ok, I've spent some time looking at prices on the net. Most of the stuff is probably priced too high as I didn't do any thorough searching.

Intel Q6600 R 2,000.00
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R R 2,000.00
Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5D 2 x 2GB R 1,800.00
ATI HD4850 R 2,005.00
Seagate 500GB SATA R 1,000.00
LG 22x SATA DVD/RW R 280.00
CoolerMaster CM690 + windowed side panel R 840.00
Corsair VX550W R 1,100.00

Total 11,025.00

So that's basically what I'm looking at for now. Probably around R1k or so lower because. Any recommendations on where I can purchase the goods for better prices in Cape Town or online? Or improvements/money savers?
At the risk of getting flamed, if it’s for gaming only, then way don’t you just get a XBOX or PS3?

XBox and PS3 games are too expensive. Though the main reason I dont like them is because of the lack of controls. Joysticks and controllers dont really give us much options in terms of input and gameplay control. Mouse and keyboard wins hands down in response time/strategy/hotkeys...etc. I'm more of an RPG and strategy gamer...

Plus I'll use the pc for other things like reading mybroadbrand and stuff :)

Dood, I thought your are building a high performance Gaming station? You have all the right ingredients except for the hard drive, instead you opt for 500GB** slow 7200 rpm SATA drive.

For high performance you have to take into account a lot of things, bus speeds, GPU speeds, RAM size and Speed, CPU, temperature control and Hard Drive speed. I suggest that you get yourself Seagate 73GB Savvio 15K, it will give you twice the performance that you would get from an average Hard Drive. Think of this, you want speed and comfort, you get a Bugatti Veyron, and only to drive it in central Johannesburg, and hope to achieve 406 km/h
:D

that ATI might beat an 8800GT but at least with Nvidia you don't have to deal with those awful drivers ....... and there are plenty of peeps moaning about ATI drivers ;):D

Here is the difference, 7200rpm(500GB) VS 15000rpm(73GB)

I agree, there are a lot of cheaper options that will also play those games, building a rig like that you are looking for bragging rights on speedtests, a faster hdd will help allot with your score.

If you are working on Travelgate's budget, you might consider a SSD 256GB cost a mere R65,077.00

The following specs are just scintillating;
# Sequential Read Rate: 60MB/sec (min)
# Sequential Write Rate: 45MB/sec (min)
# Sequential Read IOPS: 58,675 IOPS
# Access Time: 0.1ms

bah@ speedtests ....... the chap just wants a gaming monster .... even my paltry E8400, 2G ram, 8800GT does just fine in the gaming stakes ....... damn the speedtests, that's just for showing off stupid numbers.

My point exactly, you don't need a R12k rig to play these games so whats the point, it's not for the game, so it must be the speedtest?

ill get the following:
1. Intel q6600 R2179.43
2. Asus p5n R1675.18
3. 4gb decent ram if you planning to Overclock, Corsair 2x2Gb DDR II 800 XMS2,R1168.34
4. HD4850, its faster than the 8800gt, R2684.97
5. The coolermaster 590 R708.28
6. 500gb hdd R848.64
7. CoolerMaster Extreme Power 650W PSU R760.27
8. Samsung SATA dvd rom, cant be more than R300

all and all comes to R9150. not bad
Then Ill spen the rest on a RAZER mouse and a logitech g11 keabord (bout a grand) or get the logitech z2300 speakers (bout R1500)

yeah that's a decent total that ....... I wonder how far I can stretch the bonus budget, lol
