Sorry but i3 2120 beats X4 970 for gaming. So gle threaded performance is usually the most important metric for gaming, and them # of cores. That said they're very close and either one would be a great choice. Certain games and apps do benefit from more cores, but everything benefits if the single-threaded performance is greater.

I'd go for the I3 as well. Have build a couple of budget gaming pc with them and they are amazing.
