HI,

Just query something : even though a phone has built in GPS, you still need to purchase extra software - right? Specifically looking at the Samsung i780 and was wondering if I could use GPS out of the box.

This will be the first Samsung with GPS right? Will be interesting to see what how there maps work and what brand of navigation the use.

From what i have read the samsung i780 is supposed to be packaged with fully licensed garmin gps, if that is not the case and our SP's are to snotty to give that to us then google maps apparently works very nicely.

Its a great phone, a fair bit faster (and cheaper - lol) than the titan 2 and uses a-gps (assisted gps - meaning it can get a satellite lock faster by using cellphone towers)

I hope it comes out with garmin though, especially considering they are boasting it on the south african samsung mobile fan site.

It should come with the software. I got myself a Samsing i560 last week and it came with the Garmin license as well. Only tihing I don't like is that you can only install Garmin on one memory card.

Be careful - the TyTN II doesn't come with software (although overseas versions come with a trial version of TomTom).

The point being that you can't make assumptions...

Yeah, im not gonna get excited about it... don't want to line myself up for dissapointment and swear to myself consistently until i have downloaded Google maps. It does look promising though, overseas they use a different app though, mobile navigator or some such thing, everything i have read from samsung in SA is pointing to fully licensed garmin gps - holding thumbs in a very casual non excitable way :P

SAMSUNG -- GARMAP

everything i have read from samsung in SA is pointing to fully licensed garmin gps - holding thumbs in a very casual non excitable way :P

Please could you be specific
-- GARMIN produces the hardware GPS --
-- GARMAP is the SA organisation that provides Southern African maps for the GARMIN hardware GPS devices. Specifically their AFRICA 2008 DVD.

I would assume that the SAMSUNG has some other type of GPS chip

Although I could be wrong -- For the GARMAPS to work the GPS MUST speak GARMIN protocol , and the maps have to be UNLOCKED to a specific device. :
((There are a number of other GPS "languages" -- NMEA -- being the general standard )

I would be most grateful if you could let me know what transpires WRT the SAMSUNG / GPS / GARMIN-GARMAP scenario

IF SAMSUNG use the GARMAP / GARMIN paradigm it means a LOT for anyone wanting to develop custom maps for this particular industry standard.

Samsungs gps does use the general standard (NMEA) which is a slightly updated version compared to the Tytan 2, it also uses the Qualcomm MSM6200 gps chipset.

I have the phone on mtn now and can confirm that one does get garmin maps used through samsung mobile navigator, there is a coupon included which activates garmin on the micro sd card... for how long it does not say but it works like a bomb. I even tested the gps on google maps and it located me right down to the section of the house i was in. Very impressive.

Here is a link to the some comparisons of a few GPS enabled phones, hope it helps - http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=175&page=8

Hi ,

MANY thanks for that info ........ JUST the sort of detail that I am needing.

NOW "I wonder" WHAT is the difference between the SAMSUNG -- "Mobile Navigator" GARMIN Mobile Hand Set MAPS and the standard full size GARMIN GPS maps

The FIRST WILL work with NMEA -- the SECOND NOT -- Hhhhmmm

IS the SAMSUNG perhaps doing an in-process translation

Has ANYONE tried to see if these "SAMSUNG" maps can be imported into GARMINS "MAPSOURCE" application

You never know -- PERHAPS -- you may be suprised -- and get something for NOTHING

the LOCATED one

Well, i havent tried porting the maps from anywhere or tried exporting them but the maps are a solid Garmin product, go to www.garmin.co.za and check Garmin XT, that is the system the samsung i780 comes with. I think Samsungs mobile navigator is just a launcher, making sure all the right stuff is there and that Garmin or whatever you are using plays nice with the phone (eg: you can go to an address saved under one of your contacts by just clicking "samsung mobile navigator" from the menu. I have seen a few apps that track your route (not via waypoints as that functionality is already there) and can export to google earth etc.

In conclusion: i dont think there is any difference, samsungs mobile navigator is just a way of installing and using garmin, the maps and everything are garmins - not samsungs, the first time you open samsung mobile navigator it checks for the garmin installation files on the memory card and installs it on the phone, without garmin, tomtom or whatever other gps system on the micro sd card it is nothing, useless.

And you may be pleased to know that the gps works perfectly with google maps for the ppc as well :)

sorry... just using this post to subscripe :o One more thing to, there are no samsung maps as far as i know... only garmins
