Bullet-proof vests for 2010?

Germany - Germany's World Cup stars were warned on Wednesday to expect to wear bullet-proof vests if they venture away from the team hotel at next year's tournament in South Africa.

The head of Leverkusen-based security firm BaySecur, who look after the the German Football Federation (DFB) and their guests when the national team play away from Germany, says their stars like Michael Ballack must take extra care in South Africa.

BaySecur is one of the firms expected to be employed by the DFB while the team is involved in the tournament which runs from June 11 until July 11 when the final will be held at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium.

"The possibility for the players of moving outside of the hotel boundaries should be kept to a minimum," BaySecur's Guenter Schnelle told German magazine Sport-Bild.

"Otherwise there must be a full escort: armed security guards and bullet-proof vests for the players."

The German Football Federation (DFB) are already looking to step up security around the team hotel in Pretoria for the World Cup.

Because of high crime rates in the republic, the DFB are taking no risks with security, says their security boss Helmut Spahn, and are looking to recruit 20 extra security guards for the team's stay at their five-star accommodation.

Private bodyguards will protect the players both within and around the Velmore Grande hotel in the South African province of Gauteng.

"We will probably use more personnel than we would normally have," said Spahn, who will spend four days in South Africa next week looking at security arrangements.

"We need to first of all get an idea of what security arrangements are already in place for both the team and the media.

"Then we will decide then whether to improve the security measures or whether they are sufficient."

According to Spahn, there is little chance the DFB will rely only on local security guards in South Africa and Germany's federal police force is already in discussions with the DFB on the issue.

Go SA Go !!!!

Around 200 days to go till kick off :p

Seems a bit overkill to me.

Then again... The security contractors are tasked with providing the best security they can, and obviously they've been given a nice fat budget. If I were them, I'd also spend it. :p

Bullet proof

They better watch the bullet proof west, otherwise the criminals will steal them to protect them self . The local police got a licence to kill.

Wonder if one of these trigger happy gorillas will cause a problem by shooting some poor fan.

A friend of mine has been the victim of more than one affirmative shopping bonanzas (a.k.a. home invasions) and on one of them he was faced by kevlar-wearing attackers. A pity for them their heads weren't bulletproof.

So, as far as the bad guys wearing bullet-proof vests goes, it's already been happening for ages.

FMJ FTW.

I am waiting for someone comes out and says ..........

"We are not apologetic for wanting an apology. This has negatively affected the entire country and the DFB should be able to say sorry."

"we don't like that racist DFB here until we have their apology."

.... etc

:D :D :D

Tourists will be like sheep :D and every criminal knows it. Not only they do not expect the violence and brutality coming their way but almost certainly they will be unarmed. What a bonanza for the locals :D Let's start a guessing game. How many tourist murders will take place during the World Cup?

Great article. I'm glad this is making the news... as much as I hate to see it at the same time. It's just more reason for the government to take measures against crime.

This world cup is going to go one of two ways: it's either going to be very peaceful, with minimal crime, no deaths, etc. Or there will be a significant amount of crime chaos (many isolated events taking place) which will cause a general outcry and end up in the media spotlight to such a degree that it will make the country look hopeless.

That's my prediction...

What happens if the media keeps silent,I only hope nothing will happen. It would look funny seeing Blatter with a West..But as with statistics from the Police it will be supressed if possible, the alleged Murders of appr. 50/day
are not daily in the Media.

In South Africa is illegal to publish crime stats. Only the police are allowed to do that and only once a year ! Furthermore, no factual figure shall be published, only differential data (i.e. the crime is up or down by x% compared to the previous year) That in itself says a lot. The murder rate is so high and violent, the news papers will need to have 10+ pages every single daily issue, just for that alone :D If one throws the Rapes, House Robberies, Assaults and all other violent crimes, into the equation, then you'll need a trolley just to carry the daily news paper to your vehicle after buying it :D Actually is ****ing sad but true . . .

This is something I can get behind, soccer, to the death.

Do they report every murder in the most violent cities in the US?

In South Africa is illegal to publish crime stats.
I'll let the local newspapers know that they're not allowed to publish those numbers they've been publishing recently.

What a load of rubbish this report is. They should pull out of the competition if they are so worried.
