Bulls rock Thread

Defense - both commitment and attitude - was very poor today. If we play like that, the Tahs will run riot next week. Add to that the fact that we almost never win the 2nd game on tour, and this time I might have to pick against my team on SuperBru

Bulls dealt double injury blow

The Vodacom Bulls were dealt a double blow on Sunday as it was learnt that both flanker Jacques Potgieter and prop Frik Kirsten would return home with injuries.

Potgieter, who limped off the field with a knee injury, went for a scan in Sydney on Saturday and was given the bad news that he had damaged his kneecap and would be out for between six and eight weeks.

Kirsten, who came onto the field as a replacement, broke his hand in the game and has also been ruled out for six weeks.

While the Bulls already gave Springbok prop Dean Greyling permission to return to South Africa because of the birth of his first child, they now have a small problem in the front row with only one fit loosehead on tour.

Dawie Steyn will start this weekend against the Waratahs, with Rayno Gerber joining up with the team on Monday after flying out of South Africa on Sunday.

“At this stage no other replacements will be called up. We will make a decision later on who will join us next week,” High Performance manager Ian Schwartz told SuperSport.com.

This also means that Springbok flank Deon Stegmann is likely to start this weekend in Potgieter’s place, giving the Bulls a fetcher for the first time in more than two months.

Not good news, especially as Potgieter has been in good form this season :(

Well not if they play like they did againt the Brumbies :p:D

+1. Potgieter has been really good. Losing Greyling is also a blow. Wonder who will start in Olivier's place.

Bulls: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 CJ Stander, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Dawie Steyn

Substitutes: 16 Willie Wepener, 17 Rayno Gerber, 18 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 19 Arno Botha, 20 Jano Vermaak, 21 Louis Fouché, 22 JJ Engelbrecht

Hope Venter and Sadie combine as well. The rest of the team looks solid but if the defence goes the same way as last weekend and the Tahs are not having as "off" day as they had against the Brumbies we could be in for a world of hurt.

Venter is very under-rated. Runs more direct lines, more physical than Meisiekind, and can offload in the tackle. It might be a blessing.

And our defense should be better out wide - anyone else notice that the 2 games Engelbrecht has started at 13 were the 2 where we conceded 10 tries, where in the other 8 altogether we only conceded 11? Tells you a lot.

Just to weigh in on your team's defensive effort over the past few weeks.

Not many people know it but the Bulls were without their defensive coach for three weeks due to Bok planning camp commitments.

Bulls basically had no defensive training over those three weeks and still won. And before they started leaking tries like a strainer leaks water, they actually did great on defense.

Good thing we will have him at the Boks.

That's cold comfort going into 3 very difficult overseas matches and then following it up with our hardest home match. Let's just say Greg will be struggling to maintain for the next few weeks.

I like Engelbrecht, he is a very attacking player, but he really does lack defensive ability
Why the Bulls opted to buy 2 wings and only play them at Centre is beyond me, If the defense does not dramatically improve its going to cost u's the Super15, The Bulls desperately need a experienced outside Centre....

2 wings?

JJ and .... ?

Well i presumed Johan Sadie is a Wing coz he really has not made a mark on Centre this far, according to Wiki he is a Centre, my bad.

What a nail bitter game...geeezz
the Sadie/Ventre combination wasn't as bad as i thought its going to be.....

Pity about Stegman, next week its going to be 8.Spies 7.Botha 6.Stander, we are running out of loosies

Yes one of these days we'll also have to follow the Stormers to Canada to find a loosie. But seriously, we have some quality in the Vodacom cup team. Van Velze is brilliant to have for like our 8th choice loosie.

Great character shown today - first time since 07 that we've won our 2nd game on tour, I think it's a lot to do with the older guys not being there.

Wepener almost botched it with that lineout.

Is it just me or is this team super cool under pressure lately? I think the Stormers game taught us a lot, in terms of not needing to be over-eager.

Hougaard - what leg drive again. Super try, and super all round.

Stegmann, pretty average anyway til his injury. We can cope without him...

Sadie - not spectacular, but solid on defense. And let's face it, the ex-incumbent Bok Jaque Fourie wasn't spectacular either during 2010-11, so it's clearly not a pre-requisite to be a good outside centre.

*** Disclaimer: I did not anywhere in that post state that Sadie is the best centre in SA, or the world - or indeed that he must play for the Boks.
