Bunny chow - Pretoria

Hi guys,

So I've been living in Pretoria (Brooklyn area) for the last 5 years or so, but I'm originally from KZN.

I'm looking for somewhere that I can get a really great bunny from, not some wannabee Indian franchise restaurant that is ridiculously over priced. If it was open today, that would be extremely awesome too. Prepared to drive about 20kms, but needing something of Durbans standard.

Take a look at the Indian placey in Menlyn on the 6th floor. Indian friends of mine always buy there and they often bring back samoosas so my guess is they might just have bunnies for you to chow on.
 
At the Montana market on zambezi drive, there is a great place. I was also in search for a good bunny when I moved up here from empangeni. I can't remember what it's called, but it's opposite the paintball shop "blades and triggers"
 
I ended up buying all the ingredients from the new god lovers market in Brooklyn and then cooked an awesome chicken curry with fresh stuff, in an "ouma" bread bunny. So full now!!
 
I work in Brooklyn as well.. met a guy yesterday that said he was opening a new Durban style takeaways in Hatfield.. next to McDonalds (not Uncle Faouzi side).. specializing in bunny chow.. gonna be open 24 hours to cater for clubbing/ student market.

Apparently they are opening today.

Sounds suspiciously like Johnny's Roti's.
 
The one in Menlyn mall is a waste, tried it recently, when you ask for "hot", they just chuck in extra green chillies.

Ive heard the one in Montana isnt too bad, but still safest bet, make it yourself:o
 
After reading this I went to said shop - it does exist, but is apparently only opening later this week (spoke to owner). I asked about pricing - he said a mutton bunny will go for about 45, so looking forward to them opening!!

Well it looks like this weekend I will be making myself cry with some homemade bunny chow.

Will have to slow cook some beef, letting it get soft over a few hours. I can't wait.

Do it in the oven at 150°C for 6-7hrs. Start on the stove and once you have browned/fried whatever you move it to the oven with a lid on and forget about it, make sure you have lots of liquid in the pot though.

Will be softer than lamb.

That place is crap :sick: tried it twice, first time awful, but thought they were having an off day, so gave them another shot, food was worse than the first time.
 
I've never had their Bunnychow, but they have kick-ass Durban curries! A place called Indian Delight at Dorinkloof shopping Centre near Centurion.

Tell Aunty I sent you!

That's really sad to hear. We ate there often a few years ago.

Zulu, this place equally crap. The "Aunty" that used to own this place sold it to a couple of pale skinned gals who haven't a cooking clue about a Durban curry ! The original owner opened another place, taking up, or rather sharing space with a Pizza store at the highveld shopping centre, next to the spar ( across from the golf estate). Her food is nothing to write home about, realistically speaking.

Yow, harsh. Can you recommend any places in the Pta region that *does* sell a tasty curry perhaps?
 
Maybe I should buy some debbin curry in bulk and courier it up to you guys in jhb/pta. Curry tastes better the next day anyways.

That's quite sad! Haven't eaten there in a long time. Really used to enjoy their food.
