Burglary

Man it sucks that you have to lock yourself up these days while the criminals roam freely.

I already made a thread about the f***ers who stole my mom's car after breaking open our security gate. Luckily I caught the one. But just a few days later they stole a bunch of stuff from RocketBoy's new house as well.

Not Kief.

I had a funny incident last night... although it isn't really funny.

I was at a nearby high school doing a workshop, and at the same time they had a meeting of the neighbourhood watch. They had cops there as guest speakers as well.

When their meeting finished, they went outside - only to find that one of the neighbourhood watch member's car had been stolen! Oh, the irony...

People really need to take home-security more seriously. There's no 'one-size-fits-all' solution. What will stop a burglar won't necessarily stop a hijacker and visa versa.

Sorry for your loss Jewelbox, I know how you feel :(

Maxidor's points are good though. We can't afford to take chances with our security for one minute in SA.

I, too am sorry to hear about this.

Recently, our landlady (who happens to be in a high position at ADT) has threatened us by saying that she will have one or more of our dogs removed, pending a full inspection of the house to ascertain whether the dogs are doing any damage to the house.

My dogs are the ONLY protective measure that I have for my wife and two children (one only 10 months old), considering that the landlady declined to install an alarm or have security gates installed.

Further to this, I would STILL keep my dogs, regardless if an alarm was installed. How can you hand the lives of your family over to a couple of inept, gun-slinging security guards who place their misguided sense of "I'm just like a cop" over the safety of his clients? In fact, my landlady has another thing coming if she thinks she will EVER did me of my dogs.

Either way, I'm one of those who treats his dogs like his children, because I know they would give their lives for my family and I without hesitation, and they are FAR superior in their method, execution and follow-through wrt security, than any armed-response company could ever be.

For interest's sake, one is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and the other is a large-breed pavement special, but no less intimidating and aggressive when and if the need arises.

Knock on my front door, and they will certainly prove this point.

Really sorry that this had to happen to you Jewelbox. The worst part is once you've been hit you have to live with the feeling of vulnerability. Hope your centre manage to make a plan.

I thought that I was safe in my house and that my belongings were safe as well. Last night however, my garage door was forced open and a lot of stuff stolen.

All day I felt sick, confused, bitter, disheartened and the more I think about it now........FURIOUS!

ADT security is suppose to patrol this complex three times during the day and night, but in 8 years I have only seen them ONCE. Say no more!

This may not be very comforting but try booby trapping your house. A friend of mine has a tug boat siren attached to his house. Anybody breaks and and people will hear about it 15 kilometres away.

Also flashing lights, racoons hate flashing lights and noise. Throw in a large siren pls half a dozen flashing lights that should send them packing.

If you have quite a lot of spare cash, set up anti personell mines in your garden. They won't be dead, but it'll make sure they crawl their sorry asses home with a few oil leaks and a missing limb or two..

Anti personel mines? This is South Africa bro, she'll sit in jail for man slaughter for half of her life. ROFL.

Town house complexes are far from secure, they may claim it but that’s a lie.

Here are some of the problems I see with regard to them

No dogs (large) allowed in many

Too many people have access codes i.e. builders, cleaners, gardeners to name a few.

No internal secure boundary walls, the crims can move from house to house easily.

You don’t really know everyone in your complex. I have heard of a few instances where crims have hired a house in a complex and then made the rounds. They just run back to the house and no one is the wiser.

It is difficult for emergency response vehicles to get in if there is a problem as the person often does not give the code properly

The only real deterrent is the electric fence around the complex and it is easy to get over them.

Most people don’t put in burglar bars as they believe that they are safe within the complex.

People in complexes are more prone to opening doors without checking the identity of the caller.

Having a guard on duty is no cure all; I have found a few curled up in front of their heater while a house in the complex has been robbed.

I would much rather stay in a house on my own property with my 5 dogs

As for landmines try this

Defender Landmine Packagehttp

Use pepperballs and dye balls

It could be interesting, plus it will scare the bastards

Oh, and body corporates don't give a bollocks- they only care about the levies coming into their account and always plead bankruptcy when you demand that things get fixed! I wish they'd change the law surrounding this.

The body corporate consists of all the owners of properties in the complex. If you blame the body corporate, you're blaming yourself and the other owners.
