Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane dislikes her predecessor, Thuli Madonsela, so much that she threatened to withdraw South Africa’s hosting of an African ombuds’ conference if the former public protector was invited.

Last month, Mkhwebane told the secretariat of the African Ombudsman and Mediators’ Association (Aoma) that the country – along with the African Ombudsman Research Centre, based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal – would not host the organisation’s conference if it invited Madonsela.

The organisation, which held its conference from November 1 to 4 in Durban, did not invite Madonsela, despite having honoured her at the event for her “outstanding and exemplary service” in office.

Madonsela’s trophy and certificate, presented at the event, were accepted on her behalf by Deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga.

Neither Mkhwebane nor her office responded to questions sent by City Press on Friday.

Mkhwebane’s threat to withdraw South Africa from hosting the conference is contained in a heated string of emails from the office’s outgoing chief of staff, Bonginkosi Dhlamini.

Mkhwebane fired Dhlamini last week, saying his post did not “match” his expertise, and on Wednesday she had her VIP protection officers escort him from the Public Protector headquarters in Brooklyn, Pretoria.

Dhlamini told City Press that on Wednesday, he was called into a meeting with human resources personnel.

“When I arrived there, I found Mkhwebane’s security guys waiting for me. When I finished [meeting] with human resources, they escorted me to my car. I gave them the access card and that was it; I left.”

An email, which Dhlamini sent to Mkhwebane the Monday before he was kicked out of the office, reads: “I will also ask Parliament whether it gave you a mandate to tell Aoma that you will not host the fifth anniversary and conference if [Aoma] invited your predecessor to receive an award that she deserved.

Please stop calling her the public protector. She is not worthy of the title.

You'd think there is an constitutional obligation for her to love her predecessor, please give her a break.

Her behavior speaks volumes.
If she doesn't respect Thuli for her work then she's obviously on the wrong side.

So are we supposed to ignore the fact that she's been purging people perceived to be Madonsela loyalists?

Happens all the time, you must be used to it by now, new CEO takes over and the executives he found in the company starts leaving as the new CEO appoints his own people to fill the positions, I really don't understand what the fuss Is all about.

Lest we forget Thuli also did not get along with her first deputy, at the end of the day she was the last woman standing and her deputy had to move on, I also don't think Thuli inherited the staff of the PP office as she found it, sure she appointed her own people that she trust to work with her and certainly the media was not scrutinizing her every step.

The concern I'd have is if those employees are dismissed in a compliant manner, other than that it's all unnecessary drama.

You're right, we should be used to it by now, we saw it with the 4 day Finance Minister.

This is not the first or only signal that this Zupta PP has sent, indicating clearly that she's "captured".

Maybe she is, maybe she isn't captured, I don't have much to form an informed opinion, all I see is nonsensical stories about her forcing staff to watch Gupta tv and her hating Thuli, it all sounds to me like a media that stil have a hangover over Thuli, (understandably so because she was brilliant) which are desperate to find anything no matter how useless to cast aspersions on the new PP.

Professional envy.

Shame it must be hard knowing you will never be what you are employed to be, not even just.

Shamepies.

The ANC is a preschool play ground, no wonder our county is in the state it is.

It's called being a grownup professional.

Ffs. The same crowd had a mourning party for Castro.

I would wait till we see her reports and chalenges in court to pass judgement and not only against Zuma but also other cases
Ok, answer me honestly:

How much energy do you think Zuma put into making sure this PP was nowhere nearly as much of a threat to him as the previous one?

I think you will find most ppl were quietly hopeful she would be similar to Thuli but her actions so far, in terms of not opposing court proceedings and such that she is totally captured

Mkhwebane’s many questionable actions so far collectively suggest that she has no intention of protecting the public, and that she is only there to protect #presidentEvil.

One former executive told City Press via SMS: “You need to know that Madonsela’s former chief of staff, Risenga Maruma, told me a few days after Advocate Mkhwebane took office that Linda Molelekoa, who started acting as chief of staff on Monday, October 17, had flashed an SMS from the new Public Protector, saying: “You are my future chief of staff”, long before Parliament voted on Ms Mkhwebane’s appointment.”

IIRC there was a parliamentary committee that voted to accept Mkhwebane’s nomination for the public protector position, the DA opposed her nomination from the start, however all other party representatives including the EFF supported her nomination.

If Mkhwebane’s appointment really was a done deal even before that committee voted, it means that some committee members must have been given a corrupt incentive to vote for Mkhwebane.

Did the Guptas bribe some committee members to vote for Mkhwebane?
